Prescribed Burning at Morro Bay State Park

What: Prescribed burning of grassland and coastal scrub.

When: Monday, October 19th through Friday, October 30th. Actual burn days will be determined by weather and permit conditions, but ignitions will last approximately 1 day. Ignitions may start as early as 7 a.m. with fire activity curtailed by approximately 5 p.m.

Where: Morro Bay State Park – the burn unit is comprised of approximately 11 acres on the northeast of Black Hill between Quintana Road, Quinn Court, and Fleming Loop Trail. The northern section of the Fleming Loop Trail will be closed during prescribed burn activities, and the remainder of the park will remain open.

Why: In order to reduce fuel loads and fire hazards as well as enhance the health of the native plant communities, and aid in the control of non-native, weedy species.

Who: California State Parks, in cooperation with CAL FIRE, Morro Bay Fire Dept. and the Air Pollution Control District. For more information, please call Dan Falat, District Superintendent, San Luis Obispo Coast District, (805) 927-2065.

Prescribed Burn Operations Planned at Several State Parks in San Luis Obispo County

SAN LUIS OBISPO — California State Parks, with assistance from CAL FIRE and other partner agencies, will carry out a series of prescribed burns in several park units in San Luis Obispo County starting late October 2026. The burns may occur in Morro Bay and Montaña de Oro state parks and may continue through June 2027. All burning is dependent on available fire resources, weather, and air quality conditions. If weather or vegetation conditions are not conducive for burning and smoke dispersal, the planned burns will be rescheduled.

Here’s what the public can expect and should keep in mind during the prescribed burns:

🔥 Some park roads, facilities, and trails near the burn area may be closed. For the most updated information on park closures, please visit the individual park unit’s webpage.
🔥 Although prescribed burns produce significantly less smoke than a wildfire, people traveling near the fire burn areas may see smoke from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the day of the burns.
🔥 In the unlikely event you smell smoke, San Luis Obispo County urges you to take precautions and use common sense to reduce any harmful health effects by limiting outdoor activities. These precautions are especially important for children, the elderly and people with respiratory and heart conditions.
🔥 The public is advised to use extreme caution while driving near prescribed fire operations due to fire personnel and equipment in the area.

These burns are part of State Park’s prescribed fire program for vegetation management, hazardous fuel load reduction, wildlife habitat improvement, and other ecological benefits. This work will include grassland and coastal scrub burns, as well as broadcast and pile burns in forested and urban/wildland interfaces to address diseased, dead, and downed trees.

These treatments will enhance the health of the ecosystems by removing diseased materials, restoring essential nutrients to the soil, and reducing the chance of a catastrophic wildfire.

State Parks plans and coordinates the prescribed burns with the San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District to minimize the smoke impacts on surrounding communities.

Did you know that sea otters live in estuaries and rest on land too? If you lived in cold water,
hauling out onto warm sand or the soft pickleweed of an estuary is a perfect way to save
energy, and recuperate.

As coastal habitat becomes crowded with human impacts, there are
fewer areas where sea otters can haul out safely. So please remember that if sea otters are
choosing to haul out on land, they may need the extra rest and warmth. Never approach a sea
otter in the wild and .

Sea otters once lived all along the Pacific coast (from Japan down to Baja Mexico), but due to the Maritime Fur Trade, their population was decimated to near extinction. The southern sea otter is currently only in central California, but perhaps one day we could see them once again in northern California and Oregon. Sea otters feed primarily on benthic invertebrates like crabs, sea urchins, clams, worms,
abalone, and have been observed feeding on more than 75 different species in CA. In parts of
the range where they are competing with other sea otters for food, they can become
specialized in types of prey.

Sea otters feed day or night, and navigate rough ocean waves while
avoiding mooching gulls. When sea otters are underwater searching for food, they sometimes
store what they have found in the loose skin folds at their armpits – an excellent snack pocket!

On a chilly winter morning, it's important to keep your paws warm!

Sea otters have a few areas without fur, including the thick pads of their paws. This is why you
will see paws over eyes, against furry cheeks, or simply just raised up out of the water towards
the sky.

Remember to and to sea otters and other wildlife, especially when
they choose to rest. If they are resting it is for a good reason. You don't want to cause a
disturbance and have those paws get wet and cold!
