🔥 Fire Safety in Action! 🧯

Last week, we welcomed students from the Gritman and Moscow High School Foundations of Healthcare class for a hands-on morning of fire safety education!

Students learned about fire prevention, fire safety, and proper fire extinguisher use and everyone had a chance to practice their skills with our fire extinguisher training prop!

Another highlight of the morning was watching our student firefighters slide down the fire pole! 🚒

We loved the students’ enthusiasm, thoughtful questions, and eagerness to learn. Thank you for spending the morning with us! We’re always grateful for opportunities to share important, potentially lifesaving skills with the next generation!

Fall burning season will be October 16th through December 13th! See post below for more information...

City of Moscow Fire Officials have announced the fall burning season will be October 16th through December 13th. Open burning is allowed for garden waste, tree trimmings, and brush only.

❗The following conditions are required for open burning❗

🏠 Burning shall be at a distance of at least 25 feet from any building, structure or other combustible material when the pile size is 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height. Anything larger shall be 50 feet or more from any structure or other combustible material.

💦 A garden hose with water supply or other fire extinguishing equipment shall be on hand and a competent person will be at the burn site at all times until the fire has been totally extinguished. Persons who are burning debris must be in legal control of the lot or parcel of land on which the burning is to take place.

🌄 There will be no burning on public land.

☠ No waste matter shall be burned which will, in the burning process, produce toxic, dense or offensive odors.

🌙 No burning will be allowed after dark and persons who are burning debris will make sure that all fires are totally extinguished before leaving the site.

🚧 No demolition or construction site burning is permitted during this burning period.

🍁 This burning period shall not include lot burning, leaves, grass trimmings or any rubbish containing paper products.

📝 A written permit is not required for this burning period; however, it should be noted that persons who do not meet all of the above requirements may be subject to fines as per the City of Moscow Code.

🚨 Burning will be ordered immediately discontinued if: 1) The Fire Chief or his designee on duty determines that smoke emissions are offensive to occupants of surrounding property, or if open burning is determined by the duty officer to constitute a hazardous condition; 2) The Department of Environmental Quality issues an air quality forecast and caution with a mandatory burn ban. Air quality conditions and burn bans can be obtained by calling (866) 790-4337 or (208) 373-0502.

October 4–10 is Fire Prevention Week, commemorating the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which claimed about 300 lives and left roughly 100,000 people homeless.

More than 150 years later, it remains a reminder that fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. Check your smoke alarms, review your escape plan, and make sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency.

🔥 Our Fall Fire Academy is in Full Swing! 🚒

This fall our new Student Resident Firefighters and several Moscow community volunteers are putting in the work to become volunteer firefighters with MVFD.

Over three months, these 14 “rookies” will complete more than 160 hours of coursework and hands-on training, developing essential skills in fire suppression, search and rescue, fireground communications, teamwork, leadership, and much more.

We’re incredibly grateful for the dedication of these volunteers who are giving two evenings a week and a few Saturdays a month to learn the skills needed to serve our community as a firefighter.

Thank you to our instructor team, led by Captain Williams, for the many hours spent teaching, mentoring, and preparing our newest firefighters.

And a special thank you to the families and friends behind our volunteers. Your patience, encouragement, and support make this commitment possible.

We’re proud of the work happening at the academy and excited to watch this group grow together over the next few months! 🔥🚒
