We received the sweetest email this week.

Emily and her son Ethan had stopped for gas. While Emily pumped gas, Ethan washed the windows. Ethan, like a lot of five years olds, took his job very seriously. When Deputy Frantz pulled in he let Ethan climb into the bed of his patrol truck and help clean the back window.

Here's what Emily wrote to us:
"It meant a lot to me to see an officer take the time to make a child feel comfortable and valued in that way. We are very thankful for your police work in our community!"

Moments like this are exactly what we hope for from every member of our team. Deputy Frantz took a few extra minutes to connect with the people we serve, especially the youngest ones. That's the kind of Deputy Frantz is. Not because it's part of the job description, but because he noticed a kid who wanted to help and let him.

We're proud to have Deputy Frantz on our team.

Thank you, Emily, for writing in and allowing us to share your story. And Ethan, thank you for the very clean back window.

This week's fair recap: Sergeant Gilbertson and SRO Paradis, locked in, in full uniform, showing pigs. We see the joke and we're not going to pretend we don't.

SRO Paradis was visited by one of our future deputies, and his goat in a very fashionable inmate uniform. The sign reads: Bad Pet, Charge: Disorderly Conduct. Court was in session. Trial by ribbon. We never got the verdict, but we're choosing to believe he got time served for good behavior.

Deputy Harkins with K9 Motch. Certified good boy on duty.

And somewhere in there, several deputies ended up next to a very skilled cowboy on stilts.

We don't know how this became a theme this year and we're not going to question it. All in all, we had fun and look forward to next year!

It's that time of year again, where the Cardboard Cartel emerges from wherever they've been hiding all year, and suddenly no political yard sign is safe after dark.

We get it. You have some big feelings. The sign feels like it personally RSVP'd to ruin your morning. But a few things:

Putting your candidate's sign on someone else's property without permission is a crime. Idaho Code 18-7029 says so, right there in the "please don't do that" section of the law books.

And if you're a card-carrying member of the Lawn Ornament Liberation Front, sneaking over at night to "liberate" your neighbor's sign, congratulations 🎉 that's theft under Idaho Code 18-2403. Cardboard and a wire stake still count as property. The Sign Snatcher Syndicate doesn't get a righteousness exemption.

Ask permission. Respect the lawn. Vote for whoever you want, just don’t let a yard sign be the reason you need a lawyer.

On September 16, 2026, the Latah County Sheriff's Office, assisted by Idaho State Police, served a search warrant at a residence in Pierce, Idaho. The warrant was executed as part of an ongoing investigation requested by the Clearwater County Sheriff's Office.

Due to an increased number of questions regarding our presence in Clearwater County, we want to clarify that law enforcement agencies routinely assist one another across county lines through standard mutual aid and inter-agency agreements. This is a normal part of how Idaho law enforcement operates.

We recognize incidents like this can generate public interest and speculation, particularly on social media. We ask the public to allow investigators the time needed to follow the facts rather than draw conclusions before that process is complete.

Because this investigation is active, no further details will be released at this time. Releasing information prematurely can compromise evidence and the integrity of the investigation.

Updates will be provided as the investigation allows.

09/15/2026

Update: Our non-emergency line is back up and running. Please call 208-882-2216 for all non-emergency matters. Thank you for your patience.

🚨 SERVICE ALERT 🚨
Update: We have a temporary non-emergency line available 208-882-7755 while our main line is being worked on. Our 911 line is not affected, please use the 911 line for emergencies only.

Our non-emergency phone lines are currently down. 911 is NOT affected, if you have an emergency, call 911 as normal.

For non-emergency matters, please email us at [email protected] until phone service is restored.

We apologize for the inconvenience and will update you as soon as lines are back up.

Statement from the Latah County Prosecuting Attorney's Office

The following release is being distributed as a courtesy on behalf of the Prosecuting Attorney's Office:

DATE: September 15, 2026
FROM: Latah County Prosecutor’s Office, Moscow Police Department and
Idaho State Police
RE: 11/13/2022 Homicides at 1122 King Road, Moscow, Idaho

"The Latah County Prosecutor’s Office, Moscow Police Department and Idaho State Police have been made aware of a potential release of unredacted crime scene photographs, that include images of the decedents, to journalists and social media commentators from an unknown source. We collectively are deeply troubled to hear of this potential release.
Providing sensitive unredacted crime scene material for public dissemination is an unwarranted invasion of the victims’ privacy and demonstrates a profound lack of integrity and professionalism. Those entrusted with access to such material must safeguard it and violating that trust and any professional and ethical duties required by such position of trust, is unconscionable.
Our thoughts remain with the victims’ families, friends, and loved ones. No family should have to endure the added trauma of knowing images from a loved one’s final moments may be circulating publicly. Their grief should not be compounded by the display, discussion, or sharing of intensely personal and painful material.
We recognize the public’s legitimate interest in transparency and accountability. The dissemination of these photographs does not serve that interest. These unredacted images should not be published, posted, shared, or otherwise distributed. Further dissemination would serve no legitimate public purpose and would only compound the harm to the victims’ families and the broader community.

👮‍♀️ Deputy Spotlight: Deputy Harkins 👮‍♀️

Wrapping up our National Police Women's Day celebration, we're proud to close out the week with Deputy Harkins!

Deputy Harkins began her law enforcement career with Pullman PD before transferring to LCSO, where she has now served 5.5 years. She currently serves as our Drug K9 Handler, working alongside her four-legged partner Motch, to keep drugs off our streets and our community safe.

🏅 Awards & Recognition:
🔹 June 2026 – Rookie K9 Team of the Year, Idaho Police Canine Association, awarded based on evaluator and instructor vote for best new K9 team at the Idaho Police Canine Association Conference
🔹 2024 – Patrol Deputy of the Year, LCSO, awarded based on supervisor recommendation for general patrol work and proactivity
🔹 September 2024 – Exceptional Service Award, recognized for her role as a Public Information Officer during the Gwen and Texas fires.
🔹 March 2024 – Exceptional Service Award, recognized for her efforts in DUI and drug enforcement in Latah County

Get to know Deputy Harkins:
🌅 Early bird or night owl? Night owl.

🐾 Dogs or cats? Dogs! (Clearly.)

🎵 Favorite music to listen to on shift? Anything high energy — but she's got a soft spot for rock with female leads, so she can sing along when no one's looking.

🏖️⛰️ Mountains or beach? It's a tie between the two!

✨ Surprising thing to learn about her: She illustrated 3 children's books!

Thank you, Deputy Harkins, for your dedication both on patrol and out in the field with your K9 partner. We're proud to have you on our team! 💙🐕

One month after 9/11, rescue workers found something no one expected: a Callery pear tree, still clinging to life beneath the rubble.

It had been through the unimaginable. Its limbs were charred, its roots torn apart, its trunk scarred almost beyond recognition. By every reasonable measure, it should not have survived.

But dedicated hands pulled the tree from the debris, replanted it in Bronx parkland where caretakers nursed it back to health over nearly a decade.

In 2010, the tree came home. Now known as the Survivor Tree, it stands tall at the Ground Zero Memorial where its weathered bark is a permanent reminder of resilience, and its green leaves prove that hope returns.

On this Patriot Day, we remember the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the many more who have died in the years since from illnesses tied to that day. We honor the first responders who ran into danger to save others. Our nation was wounded that day, but it did not fall. Like the Survivor Tree, we carry on.

We will never forget.
