This is one of the hardest posts I’ve ever had to write. I’m not only the Fire Chief of the Kronenwetter Fire Department, but I’m also Cindy’s sister. Earlier this month, we shared that Cindy was bravely fighting metastatic melanoma. With incredibly heavy hearts, we mourn her passing on September 29th.
Cindy joined KFD later in life, and I had the privilege of watching her grow into a firefighter who served with heart, humor, dedication, and determination. She was proud of the work she did, proud of our department, and especially proud to serve alongside her son, Ashton.
When Cindy joined our department, we gained so much more than another firefighter. We gained someone who worked hard, cared deeply, and was always willing to step up. She took it upon herself to mentor some of our newer and younger department members, sharing her knowledge, encouragement, and experience with those around her. Cindy was also a cornerstone of KFD events and community outreach. She was always involved behind the scenes and on the front lines, helping make sure our events were successful, welcoming, and most importantly, fun for the public. Even towards the end she was worried about our FD open house that is coming up - to show testament of her dedication.
For those who have asked, we will continue to keep donation options open to support her son, Ashton, during this incredibly difficult time. Donations can be made to the Kronenwetter Fire Department with the notation “Benefit Fund for Cindy Smith,” or directly through Venmo at .
Thank you to everyone who supported Cindy throughout her fight. Your kindness, love, prayers, and generosity carried her—and all of us—through some incredibly difficult days.
Cindy will be deeply missed by me, our family, and the entire Kronenwetter Fire Department. Her impact on our department and the people she served alongside will not be forgotten.
