πŸš’ RED SHIFT | BUSINESS FAMILIARIZATION TOUR πŸš’

Today, Mosinee Fire District’s Red Shift had the opportunity to tour Sulzer Machine, a local machine and fabrication shop that has been in operation since 1988!

During the tour, crews were able to get a firsthand look at the facility, its operations, and the ongoing construction project that began in May. Crews also learned about the new sprinkler system and the hydrostatic testing being conducted as part of the installation.

🏭 Why are these tours important?

Business familiarization tours allow our firefighters to better understand the buildings, equipment, fire protection systems, and potential hazards within our response district. Knowing these facilities before an emergency occurs helps our crews make safer, faster, and more effective decisions when seconds count.

πŸ‘ A huge thank you to Sulzer Machine for taking the time to welcome our Red Shift crew, show us around the facility, and provide valuable information about your operations and improvements.

Building relationships with our local businesses is an important part of keeping our community safe!

πŸš’πŸ”₯ FIRE PREVENTION FUN CONTINUES! πŸ”₯πŸš’

Today, crews from the Mosinee Fire District had another great opportunity to spend time with the little ones at the Kathleen M. Czech Head Start Center!

Our firefighters enjoyed teaching the kids about fire safety, showing them what a firefighter looks like in full protective gear, and helping them understand that firefighters are there to help, not to be afraid of! πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’

The kids also had the opportunity to check out Engine 1 and our ambulance, getting an up-close look at the equipment we use to keep our community safe! πŸš’πŸš‘

A huge THANK YOU to the staff and students at the Head Start Center for welcoming us! We truly enjoy these opportunities to connect with our youngest community members.

πŸ”₯ Remember, fire prevention doesn’t end when Fire Prevention Week is over. Fire safety is important 365 days a year!

Press Release

Re: Grass Fire Incident – Town of Mosinee, WI

On Monday, October 12, 2026, at approximately 1:41 p.m., the Mosinee Fire District along with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources were dispatched to a reported grass fire in the area of County Road B and Ahrens Lane in the Town of Mosinee.

Initial reports indicated that a property owner was operating a lawn tractor while mowing a trail through a wooded area when leaves and vegetation beneath the tractor ignited. The fire subsequently spread to the surrounding vegetation and involved the lawn tractor.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered challenges accessing the fire due to its remote location, approximately one-quarter mile from the roadway, and limited access for conventional fire apparatus. Crews deployed the district's Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) to locate the fire and begin suppression operations. Firefighters located an approximately 200-foot area of burning vegetation, with the fire spreading eastward. Due to the location and conditions, additional resources were requested from the South Area Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) District. Fire suppression efforts were coordinated using specialized wildland firefighting equipment, including UTVs and a DNR heavy brush unit. The fire was brought under control at approximately 2:44 p.m. Crews remained on scene to monitor the affected area and ensure no remaining hot spots were present. One individual sustained superficial burns to the arm and face. The individual was evaluated and treated at the scene but declined further transport. The Mosinee Fire District would like to thank the SAFER District and Wisconsin DNR for their assistance in bringing this incident under control. The coordinated response and use of specialized equipment were instrumental in accessing and extinguishing the fire.

Fire Safety Reminder: As fall conditions bring an accumulation of dry leaves and vegetation, residents are reminded to exercise caution when operating lawn equipment near wooded or grassy areas. Hot engine components and exhaust systems can ignite dry vegetation, potentially resulting in rapidly spreading fires.

Please check the DNR website before burning πŸ”₯ this weekend. Stay safe

Just as the leaves are changing colors on trees across Wisconsin, so too are the colors of the fire danger map. Whether you’re planning a campfire or preparing to burn debris, remember to check fire conditions before you burn!

The lack of rain has created extreme and exceptional drought conditions throughout the entirety of northern Wisconsin. As a result, we are starting to see elevated fire danger and increased wildfire activity in many areas.

In the last week alone, nearly 20 wildfires have occurred, with most of them caused by sparks from hot equipment and downed powerlines. Areas are especially vulnerable to wildfires again in the fall after the leaves have fallen from the trees and the plants and grasses go dormant in preparation for winter.

Heading into the weekend, the forecast is showing warm, dry and windy conditions, all of which increase fire risk. Follow these tips to help reduce the risk of wildfire:

– Before burning any debris piles, obtain proper permits and check the daily burn restrictions as burning is suspended in a few northeastern Wisconsin counties: https://apps.dnr.wi.gov/wisburn/ #/

– Sparks from hot equipment can easily ignite a wildfire – operate machinery early in the morning or late in the day to avoid peak burn conditions during the middle of the day. The same goes for campfires – have those in the evening when the winds are calmer and the humidity rises.

– Make sure any recently conducted burns are completely extinguished, as hidden embers can easily escape and start a wildfire even hours later.

The increased fire danger will persist until there is significant precipitation in the form of rain or snow. The DNR will be staffing fire equipment as conditions persist.

πŸ”₯ A DAY IN FIRE SERVICE HISTORY – OCTOBER 8, 1871 πŸ”₯

πŸš’ The Great Chicago Fire & The Great Peshtigo Fire

155 years ago, on October 8, 1871, two of the most devastating fires in American history began on the very same day.

πŸ”₯ The Great Chicago Fire – Chicago, Illinois

The Great Chicago Fire burned from October 8–10, 1871, destroying more than 17,000 buildings, leaving approximately 100,000 people homeless, and claiming an estimated 300 lives.

πŸ”₯ The Great Peshtigo Fire – Peshtigo, Wisconsin

On that same night, a massive wildfire swept through northeastern Wisconsin, destroying the town of Peshtigo and surrounding communities.

The Peshtigo Fire burned approximately 1.2 million acres and claimed an estimated 1,200–2,500 lives, making it the deadliest wildfire in recorded United States history.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Two Fires. One Night. A Lasting Legacy.

While the Great Chicago Fire became nationally known, the Peshtigo Fire remains one of the most tragic and often overlooked disasters in American history β€” right here in our home state of Wisconsin.

These tragedies serve as powerful reminders of how quickly fire can spread, the devastating impact it can have on communities, and the importance of fire prevention, preparedness, and education.

πŸš’ During Fire Prevention Week, the Mosinee Fire District honors the lives lost in both tragedies and reminds everyone that fire safety starts with each of us.

Learn from the past. Prepare for the future. Prevent the next tragedy.

πŸš’πŸ”₯ A Busy Day of Fire Prevention at MFD! πŸ”₯πŸš’

Yesterday was a fun-filled and busy day for the Mosinee Fire District as our crews spent time visiting kindergarten classrooms and welcoming 2nd grade students to the fire station for tours!

Our firefighters had the opportunity to teach students about fire safety, show them our fire apparatus and equipment, and help them learn what firefighters do to keep our community safe. πŸš’πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’πŸ‘©β€πŸš’

Seeing the excitement, smiles, and curiosity from the kids is what makes Fire Prevention Week so rewarding!

πŸ‘ A HUGE thank you to all of our firefighters and EMS personnel who took time out of their busy schedules to help educate our young students. Your dedication to fire prevention and community education truly makes a difference!

We also want to thank the teachers, staff, and students for allowing us to share these important fire safety lessons!

πŸ”₯ Fire prevention starts with education, and it’s never too early to learn!

πŸ”₯ FIRE PREVENTION WEEK – CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY! πŸ”‹πŸš’

Today’s fire safety reminder is all about the rechargeable batteries we use every day.

Lithium-ion batteries power everything from phones and tablets to power tools, e-bikes, toys, and other devices. When they’re damaged, improperly charged, or used with the wrong charger, they can become a serious fire hazard.

⚑ A few simple ways to stay safe:
β€’ Always use the manufacturer-approved charging cord and equipment.
β€’ Stop using batteries that are swollen, damaged, unusually hot, or have an odd odor.
β€’ Charge devices on a hard, flat surface β€” not on beds, couches, or under pillows.
β€’ Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the regular trash or recycling bin.
β€’ When possible, unplug devices once they’re fully charged.

A little attention to how we buy, charge, and recycle battery-powered devices can make a big difference.

πŸ”₯ Charge into Fire Safety β€” and help keep your home and family safe!
