🚨🔒 **CHILD SEXTORTION AWARENESS** 🔒🚨
Our students have now been back in school for approximately a month, and the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind parents, guardians, educators, and our community about the very real dangers children and teenagers can face online.
**Sextortion is a form of child s*xual exploitation and blackmail.** An offender may use fake accounts, deception, threats, or manipulation to obtain explicit images or videos from a child and then demand money, additional images, or other forms of compliance.
These crimes can happen through social media, messaging apps, gaming platforms, and other online spaces.
⚠️ **PARENTS: TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN.**
Make sure they understand:
• People online may not be who they claim to be.
• Predators may use fake profiles and stolen photos to appear trustworthy.
• They should never feel pressured to send explicit images or videos.
• If something happens, they can come to a trusted adult for help.
• **They will not be in trouble for asking for help.**
🛑 **IF YOUR CHILD IS BEING THREATENED OR BLACKMAILED:**
❗ DO NOT send money.
❗ DO NOT send additional images or videos.
❗ DO NOT delete messages, accounts, or other evidence.
❗ REPORT the account to the platform.
❗ TALK TO A TRUSTED ADULT AND REPORT THE INCIDENT.
Most importantly: **THE CHILD IS NOT TO BLAME.** Sextortion is a crime, and victims should never feel ashamed to ask for help.
🎥🔐 **NO ESCAPE ROOM — A RESOURCE FOR PARENTS AND FAMILIES**
The **National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC)** has created **“No Escape Room,”** an interactive experience designed to help parents, caregivers, and young people better understand how financial s*xtortion can happen and recognize warning signs.
The experience is based on real-life patterns reported to NCMEC and can help start important conversations about online safety.
