STATEMENT FROM SURRY COUNTY GOVERNMENT:
The Surry County Board of Commissioners are very pleased that all fire departments have signed updated fire and rescue service agreements. We value each of the departments and look forward to continuing our relationship to provide service to the public.
The process has taken a lot of work and cooperation from all parties. The County and the departments accomplished two things: All fire departments signed the same contract (with certain modifications to Dobson’s contract to accommodate their municipal status) and funding for all fire departments will come from one fire service tax district, with one rate for all citizens.
As part of this process, and at the Board of County Commissioners’ direction, the County Attorney issued several letters to address fire department comments and concerns. These interpretations and clarifications apply to all departments equally.
All five County Commissioners - Chairman Bill Goins, Commissioner Melissa Hiatt, Commissioner Mark Marion, Commissioner Eddie Harris and Commissioner Van Tucker - were equally committed to and involved in this process. The County Attorney’s letters were issued after all five County Commissioners individually approved each interpretation and clarification.
We appreciate the fact that the members of every fire department put their lives on the line every day to protect the citizens of this County. The County Commissioners look forward to continuing to work with every department to serve the citizens of Surry County.
