Thanks to The Mount Dora Library Association, we recently acquired this colorful advertisement promoting the sale of tangelos and temple oranges from the Wayside Packing House in Mount Dora from around 1955. Both the tangelo and the temple orange are hybrid citrus fruits. The tangelo is a hybrid of a tangerine and a pomelo or grapefruit. The tangelo was brought to Lake County by J.P. Donnelly in the early 1920s from Walter Swingle of the United States Plant Board. Donnelly passed the cutting to a local grower, William Watt, who cultivated the crop. The temple orange is a "tangor", a natural hybrid of a tangerine and a sweet orange, discovered around 1896 and brought to the United States from Jamaica.

Packing houses, like the Wayside, handled and shipped varieties of novelty fruits and gift baskets across the country. One listed gift basket was the "Mexican Hamper", a lidded wicker gift basket which likely contained a mix of citrus fruits, jellies, marmalades and candied fruits.

The Mount Dora Archives is a joint effort of the Mount Dora Historical Society, The Mount Dora Library Association and the City of Mount Dora. Learn more about Mount Dora’s history at your library and the Mount Dora History Museum.
