It’s Fun Fact Friday. Today we’re spotlighting a Burlington County landmark that’s rumored to be haunted as well as historic.

The Burlington County Prison Museum is a National Historic Landmark designed by Robert Mills, one of America’s first native-born and trained architects. Built in 1811, the Burlington County Prison Museum in Mount Holly housed inmates for more than 150 years. When it closed in 965, the prison was the oldest continuously operating jail in the United States, and its past inmates included several notorious names, among them Albert DeSalvo, known as the Boston Strangler.

But the prison’s stories don’t end with its former inmates! The museum has attracted paranormal investigators, including the team from Syfy’s Ghost Hunters. Reported encounters over the years have included unexplained sounds, mysterious voices, and loud bangs. Some even believe the spirits of former inmates may still linger within the prison’s historic walls.

In honor of spooky season, you can purchase tickets for The Haunting on High Street, a series of haunted tours through the museum on October 17, 23, 24, 30, and 31. Tickets are available online at hauntingonhighstreet.com . Proceeds benefit the Historic Prison Museum Association.

And if you’re a fan of escape rooms, the museum offers a challenging, yet fun “escape the prison” adventure consisting of prison riddles and puzzles to solve.

The museum’s normal operating hours are on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.

Burlington County helped celebrate a new business that opened in Lumberton.

CDL Central held an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday to celebrate their start of operations at 1632 Route 38 Suite W3, Lumberton. The business provides a professional and convenient location for commercial vehicle drivers to obtain their required physical examinations and medical certification.

Burlington County Commissioner Randy Brolo and Lumberton Mayor Tarrence Benson were proud to attend the open house. The pair welcomed Dr. Thomas Cranmer and his staff to the county and thanked them for the services they are providing and the job opportunities they are helping to create.

Welcome CDL Central and thank you for choosing Burlington County!

Burlington County residents and stakeholders are invited to a public information meeting this month about County plans to rehabilitate or replace the Church Road Bridge (D4.56) in Medford Township.

The County Bridge .56 crosses the Southwest Branch of the Rancocas Creek on Church Road (County Route 616), immediately adjacent to Historic Kirby’s Mill and Kirby’s Mill Dam. It was originally constructed in 1908, and its steel truss superstructure was replaced in 1972-73 after it was damaged by a motor-vehicle accident. During its most recent inspection, the bridge was classified as structurally deficient, functionally obsolete and scour critical.

The virtual meeting will be held on Thursday, October 22, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will include a presentation about the bridge’s existing condition and the conceptual plans the County is considering.

Interested residents can access the virtual meeting at: https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/219895935830223?p=05NF5qerq3d0MKKCd9

The meeting can also be accessed by phone by dialing 1-469-206-8545 (Conference ID #: 156 877 41 #).

Questions and comments about the project can also be submitted by email to [email protected].

This Thursday, we’re Turning Back Time to look at Edward Harris of Moorestown, a farmer and nature enthusiast for whom several animals are named.

Harris was born in 1799 in what is now the Smith-Cadbury Mansion (today home of the Historical Society of Moorestown). In 1824, Harris met John James Audubon and took a liking to Audubon’s drawings of birds. Harris bought a batch of them and invested further to help pay for the publication of The Birds of America. Harris later joined Audubon on two expeditions to the Gulf Coast and up the Missouri River in 1837 and 1843, respectively.

Harris’s Hawk, so named by Audubon in The Birds of America, is a chestnut-shouldered hawk that hunts in family groups and lives in the American Southwest. Its cooperative nature made it popular with falconers, and trained Harris’s Hawks have been used to keep pigeons off the courts at Wimbledon.

While on the Missouri River expedition, Harris shot a large black-bibbed sparrow that Audubon had never seen, and Audubon named it Harris’s Sparrow, writing that he did so “as a memento of the grateful feelings I will always entertain towards one ever kind and generous to me.” Another naturalist, Thomas Nuttall, had described the sparrow a few years earlier, but Audubon’s name stuck. Harris’s Sparrow is the largest sparrow in North America and breeds in the Canadian tundra.

Harris’s Squirrel lives in the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico and uses its tail to shade itself. The buff-fronted owl, which lives throughout South America, was given the scientific name Aegolius harrisii by Philadelphia ornithologist John Cassin in 1849.

Harris, who is also known for bringing the first Percheron draft horses to the United States, died in Moorestown in 1863.

The Burlington County Commissioners recognized 4-H Week and the extraordinary young citizens, volunteers, and leaders that the program helps foster during last night’s board meeting.

The youth development program is run through the Rutgers Agricultural Experiment Station Cooperative Extension and provides fun, educational programs and volunteer opportunities for children and teens from kindergarten through high school, and even post-high school. Through the various 4-H clubs and activities, Burlington County youth master subjects such as horticulture, animal science, and food safety. They also gain life and leadership skills and learn the value of community service.

Members of the 4-H Active Citizenship Club attended the Commissioners’ meeting last night and shared many of the varied service projects and activities that 4-H members have completed, including park cleanups, collections for needy families and military service members, and more. They each received County certificates of appreciation in honor of their community service.
