MORNING UPDATE: Bunker Fire tops 2,300 acres near Highland Industrial Park; state emergency center activated, National Guard sending helicopters and dozers. (the fire has been named the Bunker Fire but there have been no reports of am******on bunkers on fire)
The wildfire burning near Highland Industrial Park in Calhoun County, now designated the Bunker Fire, had burned 2,338 acres as of early Tuesday with no containment figure available, according to state fire mapping data.
The fire was first discovered at 1:15 p.m. Monday, hours before it forced the evacuation of Southern Arkansas University Tech, the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy and homes north of U.S. Highway 278 between Calhoun Road 10 and Calhoun Road 95.
The Arkansas Division of Emergency Management has activated the State Emergency Operations Center in North Little Rock to coordinate state, local and federal resources. The Arkansas National Guard said helicopter crews were inbound to the Camden and Hampton area before dawn Tuesday, with bulldozer and fireplow crews staging to head to the fire line this morning.
ADEM said the activation allows agencies to monitor fire behavior, evaluate threats to communities and infrastructure and support firefighting operations as conditions develop.
Arkansas 203 and Arkansas 274 remain closed to all but emergency traffic. Shelters are open at Victory Baptist Church, Hampton High School Library and Hampton First Assembly of God Church in Hampton.
Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday night she had received outreach from the U.S. Department of War and the White House. Highland Industrial Park is home to Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, which builds HIMARS and GMLRS rockets, along with L3Harris Aerojet Rocketdyne, General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, Raytheon and Spectra Technologies.
At 2,338 acres, the Bunker Fire is already nearly twice the size of the March 2025 wildfire near the park, which burned more than 1,200 acres.
No injuries have been reported, and officials have not released a cause or said whether any structures have been damaged. Evacuation orders and road closures remain in effect until local officials say otherwise.
