Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center Dee Norton is a 501(c)(3) non-profit accredited by NCA. If a child needs to be protected, a plan is put in place.

The Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center provides forensic interviews, medical exams, mental health assessments, therapy, and case coordination to child victims and their families. ASSESSMENT:
Specially trained professionals conduct a thorough first interview which provides a clear record of the concern. The goal of this assessment is to answer the question, “Has there been abuse?”

ACTION:
Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center's professional team then works with agency partners - including medical, legal, social services and mental health- to take appropriate action as quickly as possible. SERVICES:
Children and their caregivers find the services they need at the Center or are referred to programs available elsewhere in the community. Individual therapy, family therapy, and group therapy are just some of the treatment services provided at Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center.

This weekend, our Dee Norton team laced up and joined the fight against child abuse at the IOP Connector Run! From the starting line to the finish, we were proud to run (and walk!) alongside so many who share our mission to protect children and strengthen families in the Lowcountry. 🏃‍♂️🏅

Happy National Dog Day! 🐾

Meet Braelynn, one of our two Companion Dogs at Dee Norton! Braelynn helps some of the children who visit Dee Norton feel safe and calm during their time with us. Whether she’s curling up at someone’s feet or soaking up some pets, she has a special way of bringing comfort when it’s needed most.

Starting a new school year can bring excitement... and anxiety. Sometimes children can feel both at the same time.

Your child may feel excited, nervous, overwhelmed, frustrated, or even all of those emotions in the same day. That's okay. Starting a new school year is a big transition, and every child experiences it differently.

One of the best things you can do is make space for honest conversations. Listen without judgment, validate how they're feeling, and remind them that you're there to support them through every high and low!

As the new school year begins, take a moment to check in with your child. Starting a new school year can bring a mix of excitement, nerves, and uncertainty, and a simple conversation can make all the difference.

Try asking:
1️⃣ How do you feel right now?
2️⃣ What’s on your mind right now?
3️⃣ What do you need today?

Your child may need time to talk, space to process, or a fun one-on-one adventure before routines pick up again. The strong connections you build and maintain with your child help foster trust, resilience, and confidence.

Let your child know it's okay to talk about anything, big or small. Those open, honest conversations create a foundation of safety that lasts all year long.

Before your child heads back to after-school activities, sports, clubs, or other programs, take a few minutes to ask questions about how children are kept safe. A safe environment starts with informed adults.

Consider asking:
1️⃣ Are background checks completed for all staff and volunteers?
2️⃣ What is the staff-to-child ratio?
3️⃣ How are staff trained to recognize, prevent, and respond to abuse?
4️⃣ Is there a child protection policy, including how concerns are reported?
5️⃣ Are there policies that prevent one adult from being alone with a child?

Whether it's a sports team, arts program, tutoring, or another extracurricular activity, every organization should have clear policies in place to protect children. By asking questions, you're helping create safer spaces for all children.
