Spring isn't the only time of the year that we can expect tornados. Hers a few slides with fall tornado stats, as well as safety tips.

This week is fall severe weather safety awareness week. We will be posting facts about fall severe weather and ways you can be prepared.

We also still have FREE weather radios that can be picked up at the office at 305 Mill St., Mount Vernon, Monday-Friday 8AM- 2:30PM. These weather radios are already programmed and ready to go, just plug them in an you will have another source to receive severe weather alerts. These radios are for residents of Posey County, at a first come first serve basis, and are limited to 1 free radio per household.

Here is the latest from the National Weather Service about this week's dangerous late season heat wave:

• The Heat Advisory for the entire area has been extended until 7 PM Saturday.
• Daily peak heat index values of 103 to 109 are forecast today and Thursday, then 100 to 105 Friday and Saturday.
• Air temperatures will reach the upper 90s to low 100s, which will approach or break record levels.

Well this heat isnt letting up on us yet. We will be under a heat advisory Tuesday and Wednesday.

Here are the key messages for this week's dangerous late season heat wave:
• A Heat Advisory is in effect today for parts of southeast Missouri and far west Kentucky.
• A Heat Advisory will be in effect Tuesday and Wednesday for the entire area. The Heat Advisory will likely need to be extended into Thursday for some or all of the area.
• Peak daily heat index values of 103 to 109 degrees are expected during the worst of the heat on Tuesday and Wednesday.
• This is latest in the season that NWS Paducah has every needed to issue a Heat Advisory.

Stay hydrated, take multiple breaks in the shade if you are working outdoors, check on neighbors, and make sure your pets have water and shelter from the sun. Hopefully once we can get through this week things will finally cool down.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001—a day that forever changed our nation.

We remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, honor the bravery and sacrifice of the first responders who answered the call, and recognize the survivors, families, and communities forever affected by the attacks.

Twenty-five years later, may we continue to carry forward the courage, compassion, and unity demonstrated in the days that followed.

Posey County Emergency Management Agency joins our community and nation in honoring their memory.

Today for National Preparedness month is build a kit.

After an emergency you may need to survive on your own for several days. Being prepared means having you own food, water and other supplies to last for several days.

Basic disaster supplies kit:

To assemble your kit store items in airtight plastic bags and put your entire disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag.

A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items:

Water (one gallon per person per day for several days, for drinking and sanitation)🫗
Food (at least a several-day supply of non-perishable food)🥫
Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert📻
Flashlight🔦
First aid kit
Extra batteries🔋
Whistle (to signal for help)
Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
Plastic sheeting, scissors and duct tape (to shelter in place)✂️
Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)🔧
Manual can opener (for food)
Local maps🗺️
Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery📱

A marginal risk for severe weather today and tomorrow, with the best chance for stronger storms occurring during the afternoon hours.

-Today for emergency preparedness week is make a plan. You never know when disaster could strike so planning ahead makes it easier to respond in the event of one.

Step 1: Meet with Your Family
Put a plan together by discussing the questions below with your family, friends or household to start your emergency plan.

How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?
-What is my shelter plan?
-What is my evacuation route?
-What is my family/household communication plan?
-Do I need to update my emergency preparedness kit?

Step 2: Assess Your Household Needs

As you prepare your plan, customize your plans and supplies to your specific daily living needs and responsibilities. Discuss how people in your network can assist each other with communication, care of children, business, pets or other needs. Consider the following:

-Different ages of members within your household
-Responsibilities for assisting others
-Locations visited frequently
-Dietary needs
-Medical needs including prescriptions and equipment
-Disabilities or access and functional needs including devices and equipment
-Languages spoken
-Cultural and religious considerations
-Pets or service animals
-Households with school-aged children

Well that "cool" down definitely didn't last long enough. The heat and humidity are back along with the possibility of severe weather Wednesday afternoon/ evening.

Attached is the latest that we have from the national weather service.

Key messages are:

• A Heat Advisory in effect for the entire region on Wednesday from 11 AM to 8 PM.
• A few strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Wednesday, mainly north of the Ohio River and in northern parts of southeast Missouri. Damaging wind gusts will be the main severe thunderstorm threat.
• Our current thinking is that the highest chances for severe weather will be between 2 and 10 PM CDT.
