Effective 8:00 am on October 1, 2026, and until further notice, residential yard and land-clearing fires are permitted again within unincorporated Skagit County.

In unincorporated Skagit County, burn permits are required for piles larger than 4 feet by 4 feet. These permits can be obtained online through the Burn Permit Request and Permit System.

Residential yard and land-clearing fires are restricted to natural vegetation, including leaves and tree trimmings. Garbage, household trash, lumber, construction waste, or demolition debris may not be burned.

Please burn responsibly. Remember, smoke, odor, or ash that unreasonably interferes with the use and enjoyment of neighboring properties is prohibited.

Properties within incorporated cities or towns, or within urban growth areas, should contact their local fire department for any applicable burn restrictions.

Contact the Skagit County Fire Marshal’s Office at (360) 416-1840 or visit our website for the online permit system link. You can also email us at [email protected]

⚠️ WSDOT ALERT:
•Both directions of SR 9 to close for 10 days to repair Lake Creek Bridge near Lake McMurray
•Full closure scheduled to begin Monday morning, Sept. 21

•LAKE MCMURRAY – Both directions of State Route 9 will close for 10 days beginning Monday, Sept. 21, to repair a bridge over Lake Creek north of Lake McMurray.

The Washington State Department of Transportation will make repairs to the bridge during the 10-day closure, and SR 9 will reopen Wednesday, Sept. 30, in its usual two-lane configuration. The bridge has been reduced to a single lane with a temporary traffic signal alternating northbound and southbound traffic since March 24 due to deteriorating deck conditions.

What to expect
Beginning at 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, SR 9 will close to all traffic over the bridge (milepost 43) until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30.

During the closure, northbound and southbound traffic can detour using SR 534, Interstate 5 and SR 538/College Way in both directions. People traveling through the area should add extra travel time to their plans.

The SR 9 Lake Creek Bridge is a wood truss bridge built in 1966. During the closure, WSDOT will replace portions of the timber deck and pave over the top with asphalt.

WSDOT bridges are inspected on a two-year cycle. The last inspection of this bridge took place in April 2025, and the bridge was determined to be in fair condition. This bridge is part of a statewide bridge system with infrastructure operating beyond its intended service life.

Real-time travel information is available via the WSDOT mobile app, the WSDOT travel map or by signing up for WSDOT's email updates.

🔥BURN BAN UPDATE🔥

Due to the continued risk of fire and the commitment of shared firefighting resources to ongoing wildland fire response efforts across Washington State, the Skagit County Fire Marshal’s Office is implementing a complete burn ban effective Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at 12:01 a.m.

The burn ban prohibits all outdoor open burning in unincorporated Skagit County. The only exception is agricultural burning, which may continue only when conducted in accordance with applicable state and local regulations and any required permits.

Propane fire tables and other gas-fueled cooking appliances are permitted during this ban. Self-contained wood pellet grills and cooking devices are allowed only when placed on a concrete or other non-combustible surface. Charcoal grills are permitted. Charcoal and ash must be disposed of in a metal container and thoroughly soaked with water. The container should be kept at least ten feet from vegetation or combustible materials for 72 hours.

If you are within the limits of an incorporated city or town, check with your fire department for current burning restrictions.

If you have questions about open burning in Skagit County, please contact the Skagit County Fire Marshal’s Office at (360) 416-1840 or our Outdoor Burning website at www.skagitcounty.net/Departments/FireMarshal/burning
