Burn Permits required starting Oct 15.

NASHVILLE โ€” Beginning Oct. 15, Tennesseans must obtain a free burn permit before burning leaves or natural debris or conducting prescribed burns. As wildfire season begins, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry (TDF) encourages residents and visitors to observe National Fire Prevention Week by practicing fire prevention and exercising extra caution when burning outdoors. Tennessee averages about 1,000 wildfires each year, burning approximately 18,000 acres.

โ€œMore than 90% of wildfires in Tennessee are caused by human activities, including escaped debris burns,โ€ State Forester Heather Slayton said. โ€œThat means individual actions matter โ€“ choosing to avoid burning on high fire danger days, getting a burn permit, taking steps to burn safely and staying with your fire until it is completely out can make a meaningful difference in preventing destructive wildfires in our state.โ€

TDF is Tennesseeโ€™s lead wildfire agency and is responsible by law for administering the burn permit system. Burn permits help TDF communicate when and where conditions are safe for burning and are issued only when fire danger is at an acceptable level. When hazardous conditions โ€” such as high winds, very low humidity or extremely dry vegetation and debris โ€” increase wildfire risk, TDF temporarily pauses permit issuance until conditions improve.

๐Ÿš’ The Cost of Fire Protection Continues to Rise ๐Ÿš’

The graphic below is a great reminder of how much the cost of firefighting equipment and apparatus has increased over the last few years. From turnout gear and SCBA packs to fire engines and ladder trucks, the price of keeping firefighters equipped and ready to serve has nearly doubled in many cases.

As a volunteer department, Neva Fire Department depends on the support of our community to help us maintain equipment, replace aging gear, and ensure we can continue providing quality emergency services when you need us most.

๐Ÿ“ฌ Our annual letter drive will be kicking off soon, and we hope youโ€™ll consider supporting your local volunteer firefighters. Every donation, no matter the size, helps us improve equipment, enhance training, and better serve the citizens of Neva and the surrounding communities.

Thank you for your continued support of the Neva Fire Department. We couldnโ€™t do it without you!

๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐Ÿš’ Special Weather Statement issued March 28 at 8:52PM EDT by NWS Morristown ๐Ÿš’ ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Fire weather concerns exist again for midday Sunday into the evening due to a very dry airmass and breezy south to southwest winds.

Relative humidity values are expected to drop into the teens and lower 20s across the whole region. Winds will gust up to 25 mph.

Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers.

Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly.

Lastly, remember to obey local burn bans.

Now that it's wildfire season in Tennessee, it's time to break down some key terms used to describe wildfire statuses:

๐Ÿ”ฅ Active: Any fire that hasnโ€™t been fully extinguished is considered active.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Contained: A fire is contained when control lines (also called fire lines) completely surround it and are expected to prevent further spread. These lines can be man-made (created with tools or dozers) or natural, like rivers, creeks, or roads.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Controlled: A fire is controlled when control lines are reinforced, hotspots near the lines are cooled, and any unburned areas within the lines are intentionally burned out. At this stage, the fire is unlikely to escape under normal conditions.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Fire Out: A fire is officially out when all visible flames and hotspots are extinguished, and thereโ€™s no chance of reignition. At this point, suppression efforts are complete.

Stay informed and stay safe this wildfire season!
