Ok folks. The burn ban is in effect again after a fun week for your local VFD’s.

NO OUTDOOR BURNING
NO BURN BARRELS
NO FIRE PITS

Check county rules for welding guidance.

If conditions allow in the future, your commissioner’s court will meet and decide if a temporary lift of the burn ban is warranted.

Please don’t make a big deal about the burn ban not being lifted unless you’re willing to join your local VFD and be there for your community every day. Please. Thank you.

The county wide burn ban was lifted yesterday.

So far today, we’ve had 3 fires due to burning of brush piles. Even though we had some nice rain over the weekend, the grass is still dry. It will burn. And then VFD members have to roll and deal with fires and muddy roads and areas.

Y’all. It’s a lot. Seriously. The fires today were people who were careful. People who know what they’re doing. And it still can happen fast.

If you’re someone who thinks that the burn ban should be lifted every time it rains, join your local VFD. Mills County has 4 that would love to have you as a member.

The burn ban has been TEMPORARILY LIFTED until Sunday, October 11, 2026 at noon.

Please call the non-emergency number to the SO, (325) 648-2245, and let them know you will be burning.

Keeping a cleared and defensible space around your home and outbuildings is so important.

Can you imagine what it would look like if that cedar tree was next to your house?

We are there for you. It’s about community. Because it matters.

The fire truck that comes when you call in most of Texas is driven by somebody who was asleep in their own bed four minutes ago. 🚒

The large majority of fire departments in this state are volunteer. Not paid, not on shift, not sitting at the station waiting. They are welders and teachers and nurses and guys who run a feed store, and they carry a pager or a phone that can go off in the middle of a shower, a birthday dinner, or a Tuesday at two in the morning. Then they drive to the station, pull gear that is still damp from the last call, and go.

They pay for a lot of it themselves, or the county pays what it can, or the community does it with a barbecue plate sale and a raffle. The trucks are often older than the people driving them. And the calls are not only fires. They are wrecks out on the highway at night, grass fires running with the wind, water rescues, and cardiac calls where the closest hospital is fifty minutes away and the volunteer EMT kneeling on the floor is the only medicine in the room.

The hard part nobody outside it talks about is that in a small town you know the address before you get there. 🙏 You know whose kitchen it is. You go anyway, and then you go back to work in the morning like it was nothing.

One story we would like to share. This picture is of James Liardon, son of the late Commissioner Ronny Liardon. James joined the fire department less than a month ago, to follow in his dad’s giant footsteps. The very first fire he made was the Hydra fire. He was on the first arriving truck with Assistant Chief Chris Blanton. They arrived at 3:43pm on Monday. Stayed overnight, and then James was finally relieved around 3-4pm Tuesday. He spent a full 24 hours at the fire. What we didn’t know was he was running 102 degree fever that entire time. He got some fluids, rested for a couple of days and then came back out. He spent most of the last few days fighting fire on the truck dedicated to his late father. These are the kinds of stories that need to be told about these massive events. Small towns are the best!

Well, nothing to report, but just wanted to check in and remind everyone that it’s still dry. There’s been no rain. And we’re still under a burn ban. This means no outdoor burning.

Don’t even look at your spouse with that smouldering look….😍

The new PPE gear that we received a TX A & M Forest Service grant to purchase has been ordered and as soon as it gets here, we’ll be sure to share some pictures of everyone modeling their new gear!

Hey. Maybe we could do a calendar? Mullin VFD 2027….

Praying for our neighboring VFD’s and communities. Please remember them in your Prayers, too.
