Power ready = power safe! ⚡ If you're using a generator during a power outage, keep it outside and away from windows, doors, and vents. Generators save the day, but used wrong they can be deadly, carbon monoxide is invisible and can build up quickly, even in partially enclosed spaces. Keep yours a safe distance from your home to protect your family.

It's National Preparedness Month! 🧡 Is your emergency go-kit ready? Build a kit that covers your household for a minimum of 3 days - water, food, meds, important documents (copy of identification & insurance), and anything specific to your family (including pets!). Use this checklist to get started, and don't wait until severe weather is in the forecast to put it together.

WATCH vs. WARNING - do you know the difference? 🧡 A WATCH means conditions are possible: stay aware and be prepared. A WARNING means it's happening: take action and move quickly. Make sure you're set up to receive alerts on your TV, phone, and radio so you're never caught off guard.

SCAM ALERT

We became aware of a new scam targeting families of recently arrested individuals.

Scammers are posing as the Rutherford County Jail, providing real inmate information such as names and charges, then asking family members to send money through Apple Pay to have an inmate released.

Do not fall for it.

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office will never call and ask you for money. Bond and bail transactions are handled directly with jail staff on site.

Never send money through Apple Pay, Bitcoin, gift cards or other payment methods at the request of someone calling you. Never provide personal or financial information over the phone.

If you receive a suspicious call or have questions about a possible scam, call 615-898-7777.

Scammers may have real information. Always verify before you pay.

Great reminder from TEMA, tornadoes can happen here in Rutherford County any month, any hour. Know the difference between a WATCH (be ready) and a WARNING (take action now), and take a minute to think through where you'd shelter before you ever need to. Check out the video below. 👇

🛡️ Emergency Management Awareness Month: A Look Back

As National Emergency Management Awareness Month comes to a close, we hope you've gained a new appreciation for the role of Emergency Management in Rutherford County.

Throughout August, we've taken you Behind the Badge to show that Emergency Management is much more than responding to severe weather.

You've seen how we plan long before an emergency occurs, train alongside our public safety partners, coordinate resources, support the Emergency Operations Center, and respond to a wide variety of incidents - from hazardous materials emergencies and search and rescue operations to aircraft incidents, major fires, special events, evacuations, damage assessments, and more.

One of the biggest lessons we hope you've taken away is that Emergency Management is a team effort.

While our staff plays an important role, we are just one part of a much larger response. Every incident brings together firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, dispatchers, public works crews, utility providers, healthcare partners, volunteers, state and federal agencies, and many others who work toward a common goal.

Each agency has a unique role. Each person brings specialized skills. Together, we serve the people of Rutherford County.

Thank you for following our Behind the Badge series and allowing us to share what Emergency Management looks like from our perspective. It has been our privilege to give you a glimpse into the work that takes place every day to help keep our community safe.

Because behind every emergency is a team working together to protect Rutherford County.

Thank you for allowing Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency to be part of that team.

It is an honor and a privilege to serve Rutherford County.

🛡️Behind the Badge: Long After the Storm

When the sirens go quiet and the news cameras leave, the work isn't over.

Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency stays involved long after the immediate response, helping connect disaster survivors with resources, coordinating rebuilding efforts, and supporting our community through recovery.

Whether it's a tornado, severe storm, or another disaster, recovery is often the longest part of the process. It takes patience, coordination, and partnership with volunteers, non-profits, and neighboring agencies to help families and communities get back on their feet.

Because our commitment to Rutherford County doesn't end when the response does.
