Despite what they may say, your teens are paying attention and you remain their biggest influence, especially since you hold the keys—literally. Before they get behind the wheel, make sure they know the rules for the road.

Avoid distractions. Hands Free Tennessee!

Avoid substances (alcohol or drugs). None makes it safer to operate a vehicle.

Buckle up (every trip, every time!)

Slow down. Speeding won’t get you there any faster (or safer).

Avoid drowsy driving by getting enough sleep.

Avoid driving with extra passengers. More people means more risk of distraction for the driver.

Tennessee’s Move Over Law (TCA 55-8-132) requires drivers to change lanes and yield to any vehicle that is stationary on the side of the road with their hazard lights on. Help keep everyone safe on our roads this fall!

Mayor Shane McFarland recognizes officers Victor Morris and Wade Lakin with STARS award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Oct. 15, 2026

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Two Murfreesboro Police officers who saved the lives of two shooting victims were honored Thursday, October 15, 2026, for their heroic efforts in a chaotic and dangerous response call.

Mayor Shane McFarland officially recognized Officer Victor Morris and Officer Wade Lakin with STARS awards during Thursday’s Council meeting for acting quickly with decisive life-saving treatment after responding to a shooting at a hotel on Old Fort Parkway, August 7, 2026.

Upon arriving at the scene, the officers observed a massive amount of blood with broken glass at the front door to the hotel. Following a blood trail down a hallway, they discovered two victims, both suffering from gunshot wounds to their legs. Morris applied a tourniquet to the leg of one victim, directly saving his life. Officer Lakin applied a tourniquet to the second victim.

Murfreesboro Police Sgt. Jeff Carroll offered the following nomination:

“Both Officer Morris and Officer Lakin responded to a local hotel in reference to a shots fired call. Upon arrival, it was obvious to both officers that victims were present. Officer Morris and Officer Lakin located two victims with severe injuries. The officers acted quickly and without hesitation to save the lives of the two individuals. Without this treatment both subjects would not have survived.”

Sgt. Carroll nominated Officer Morris and Officer Lakin for the STARS Award for their life-saving efforts during the chaotic, dangerous situation. Both officers risked their safety to ensure the safety of the injured subjects.

Hired as a Police Officer trainee in December 2021, Officer Morris completed field training and evaluation before becoming a certified officer Aug. 20, 2022. Officer Lakin has served as part of the Field Force Operations Unit since February 2026. Hired as an officer in July 2024, Lakin completed field training and evaluation before beginning service as a certified officer June 9, 2025. Prior to becoming an officer, he worked for the Murfreesboro Water Department as a Plant Operator from 2023 to 2024.

The STARS Service Excellence program recognizes outstanding employees who embody the city’s standards of service excellence and exemplify its core service values. The purpose of the STARS award is to recognize and reward those employees who go beyond their normal job duties in providing outstanding customer service to internal and external customers.

STARS stands for “Succeeding Through Attitudes Reflecting Service Excellence.” STARS are examples of representing the City in a positive light, exhibiting the core values, and creating a better quality of life for citizens.

A STARS committee, consisting of City employees, reviews the STARS nominations each month and then votes for the nominees.

Congratulations to officers Victor Morris and Wade Lakin for being named STARS!

Abuse can happen to anyone, and it is not always visible to others.

If you are experiencing domestic violence, tell someone you trust. Help is available, and there are people ready to listen, support you, and connect you with resources.
If you are in immediate danger, call 911 or contact the Murfreesboro Police Department.

Behind The Badge
A simple act of kindness turned an ordinary day into something extraordinary for a group of kids playing basketball and a Murfreesboro Police Officer on patrol. It all started with a simple question, “Can I have a donut? Followed by, “Can we have some ice cream?

ALPR alert leads to arrest of two with outstanding warrants in Murfreesboro

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – (October 7, 2026) An automatic license plate reader (ALPR) alerted Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD) officers to a stolen pickup truck, resulting in the arrest of a man and woman with outstanding warrants.

Kenneth Phillips, 43, the driver, was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle on Sunday, Oct. 4. The passenger, Dorothy White, 34, faces charges of drug paraphernalia possession, evading and resisting arrest. Both had outstanding warrants.

An MPD officer patrolling South Rutherford Boulevard near John Bragg Highway received an alert from the ALPR about a stolen white Chevrolet 1500. After confirming with dispatch that the pickup was listed as stolen in the National Crime Information Center or NCIC, the officer conducted a felony traffic stop. White took off running but was quickly apprehended by responding officers after a brief foot pursuit.

The pickup had been reported stolen in Rutherford County. Deputies from the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office assisted in returning the vehicle to its registered owner.

Phillips and White are being held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. Phillip’s bond has been set at $15,000 and White at $7,500. Both are set to appear in General Sessions Court on Nov. 10.
