I remember reentering the country on the morning of the security threat on August 10, 2006. The ban on liquids was immediate. BAM. No warning for anyone with a morning flight who had already arrived at any US airport.
Women were entering the airport only to discover they had to dump a fortune in makeup and skincare products. We watched one teenage girl crying hysterically as she tossed hers into the bin. Mothers and fathers were having to dump breast milk and bottles of formula. People were frightened, confused, and in tears. We used to pack it ALL in carry-ons!
Our travel day from Orlando International Airport to Myrtle Beach, SC, took almost 24 hours in the scramble following that threat, and when we finally arrived, all five pieces of our luggage were lost.
If these measures keep us safe, keep the ban and institute whatever is necessary. However, if we have finally reached a point with technology where we can keep our shoes on AND determine when water is simply just water, then AMEN and thank you!
