This morning we gathered the troops again to celebrate those who came before us. B Shift worked hard first thing when they arrived on duty to get breakfast ready for the entire shift and all the retirees that attended. Everyone swapped stories, met the newer guys on the team, and of course had to get a group photo of everyone in front of our newest engine.

This job means you’re away from home roughly 1/3 of the year, so of course there will be disagreements, but it forms a type of camaraderie unlike most careers. These guys might not don the bunker gear or take the 2AM calls anymore, but they’re still firefighters at heart, and we’re happy to get together when we can.

Today is October 1st so that is the start of all of our Fire Safety events!

The NFPA’s theme for this year is discussing safety around lithium ion batteries, how to properly charge the devices that use them, and what to do if you notice any issues.

Fire Safety Week is October 4-10 but we have plans throughout the entire month of different touch-a-trucks, station tours, and trainings. Of course if you ever have any safety related questions or want to see the truck in person, feel free to stop by or give us a call!

In honor of those who lost their lives 25 years ago, members of our department climbed the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs while carrying the name of a fellow firefighter. They talked a little bit about each person represented and those they left behind to ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten. This job isn't an easy one, but we do what we can to make sure others arrive home safely.

Our newest engine is officially home!

We want to say a big thank you to everyone who made this possible:

Thank you to everyone who showed up and braved what felt like 500° heat/humidity to celebrate with us. It was great seeing everyone who helped keep up the firefighting tradition.

Thank you to those in the department who helped pick out this apparatus. They spent time researching and looking through all our options to make the best choice.

Finally, thank you to the citizens of Nacogdoches for all of their support of our department. This isn’t something for us, it’s for the community to make sure we’re ready to go from the service runs, to the medical emergencies, and of course the structure fires. We couldn’t do our job without you.

If you didn’t get a chance to stop by Wednesday keep an eye out around town and at some fun events in the future!

There’s one week left of the Nac Summer Scavenger Hunt!

We’ve loved being part of this summer tradition for the past three years and we’re already looking forward to next year. This is a fun opportunity to get to see the various sites around town and learn something new, it’s also a great excuse to see our updated museum tags/exhibit panels!

And with that our roster is full! It’s been crazy few years of restructuring, retirements, promotions, and hiring but all probationary firefighters are now full-fledged members of the Nacogdoches Fire Department.

Today we celebrated Colton Gutermuth getting off probation and earning his official NFD black helmet. Firefighter Gutermuth was surrounded by family and his crew, but it was an honor to see his helmet presented to him by his dad and our most senior member Captain Steven Gutermuth, a 29 year veteran of the department.

Firefighter Gutermuth worked hard by starting as a cadet, going through both the fire academy and EMT school and then the remainder of his probationary period spending time at all our stations. Although he’s been around the department his entire life, it’s definitely eye opening when you’re the one on the inside going to the calls. We’re so proud of Colton and all the newest members of the department. We can’t wait to see how we continue to grow and improve as time goes on!
