Meet Mark Spurgeon!
Today, Makenzie Spurgeon is proud to spotlight her dad, Mark Landon Spurgeon, who served in the U.S. Navy as a Petty Officer Second Class and Airman!
Mark was primarily stationed with Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 15 (HM-15) in Corpus Christi, Texas, with six-month overseas deployments to Bahrain. As an aircrewman, he flew aboard MH-53 helicopters and also worked on them as an air framer. His service included Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom following 9/11.
Today, Mark continues to work hard for his family. Makenzie is especially grateful for his sacrifices, which have helped make her education at SFA possible through veteran-dependent benefits.
Thank you, Mark, for your service to our country and for all you do for your family! We're proud to celebrate you!

Meet Grant!
Meet Grant, an SFA senior pursuing his BBA while serving in the U.S. Navy! He served aboard two destroyers in San Diego, California, and now works as a recruiter with the Navy Recruiting District in Houston.
As a Fire Controlman, Grant works with weapon targeting systems and also serves as a Small Arms Instructor. One of his wildest Navy memories? Firing a .50-caliber machine gun during a training exercise until the target boat exploded!
When he’s off duty, Grant enjoys playing guitar (for 20 years!), golfing, and tinkering with cars. He's most proud of serving his country and the friendships and mentorships that have come with his Navy career.
Thank you for your service, Grant! Axe ’em, Jacks!

Outside of work and school, Lia enjoys building LEGOs, drone videography, traveling, and ziplining. One of her proudest accomplishments is becoming the youngest retired person in her family!

Clay served aboard the USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) as a Fire Controlman (Aegis) Radar Technician. His favorite duty station was San Diego, California, and one of his favorite parts of serving was getting to visit different countries around the world.
When he’s not working, Clay enjoys creating digital art and reading LitRPG books. He’s proud to have served alongside amazing people and to call Texas home, especially seeing the respect shown to those who have served.
Thank you for your service, Clay, and for continuing to make a difference in the SFA community! Axe ’em, Jacks!

Meet Chris, a Junior studying International Business at the Rusche College of Business.
When he’s not studying, he enjoys traveling to see his favorite bands and gaming in his free time.
He served at Osan Air Base in South Korea, Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, and deployed to Kuwait. His favorite Air Force memory is working with the Marines and Polish Air Force at Al Jaber during his first tour in Kuwait: “Funniest guys I could ever hang out with and we all had the same idea and mentality. 10/10 would do it again.”
We’re grateful for his service and proud to celebrate him this U.S. Air Force Birthday.
Thank you for your service, Chris!

Meet Ciaira, a freshman at Stephen F. Austin State University and a proud military-connected student.
Ciaira is currently pursuing a degree in Biology with a concentration in Aquatics. Both of her parents, Courtney and Jason, served in the United States Air Force, and their military careers took them to bases and deployments across the United States and overseas.
Both Courtney and Jason shared that their favorite duty station was Grand Forks Air Force Base. Courtney served in Maintenance Production Management, while Jason held a variety of roles throughout his career, including Assistant Maintenance Flight Chief, Section Chief, Crew Chief, Aircraft Maintenance Instructor, Unit Security Manager, and Air Advisor.
One of Courtney’s favorite Air Force memories was spending time at Al Udeid Air Base, sitting near the flight line and watching aircraft take off and land while Jason taught her about the different aircraft. She especially remembers watching them at sunset, when the engine flames and afterburners could be seen. Jason’s favorite memories came from deploying to new places and experiencing different cultures, with the deployments he shared with Courtney being especially meaningful.
Today, Courtney enjoys watching TV, while Jason enjoys reading and working out. Courtney is especially proud of being selected to brief a 3-star general on her processes and procedures and later being selected to brief higher headquarters at McConnell Air Force Base. Jason is most proud of his time as an instructor and the opportunity to develop and mentor the people who would come after him.
Ciaira’s story highlights the impact of military service that extends beyond the service member and into the lives of their families. We are proud to recognize Ciaira and her family as part of SFA’s military-connected community!

Today we’re proud to feature Ethan, the Coordinator for Outdoor Pursuits at SFA Campus Recreation, who is a dependent of his father, U.S. Air Force veteran Jeff!
Jeff served from 1981–1987 at Hessich Oldendorf Air Station in West Germany and at Kelly AFB in San Antonio. His favorite duty station was the “HOG,” the smallest air base in Europe, where the close-knit environment felt like family.
As a Telecommunications Systems Specialist, he maintained and repaired DSTE systems, teletype systems, and crypto equipment, later training in encrypted radio systems. One of his most vivid memories was standing on the East/West German border and experiencing a tense moment with a border guard—a reminder of the reality of the Cold War.
Jeff reflects with pride on standing against the spread of communism during that time, but says what he is most proud of is his family: “After my service the thing that I am most proud of is the children we brought into the world and the adults they have become.”
We celebrate both Jeff’s service and Ethan’s continued impact here at SFA as part of our veteran and dependent community.
