This week Ms. Stewart’s ELA 7th grade Honors students (along with 5,000 other students across the state of North Carolina) were able to meet with Holocaust survivor, Allan J Hall who spoke about his time before World War II, his survival experience during the Holocaust and his ultimate move to the US after World War II.
Students were listening while taking notes and able to ask questions at the end. This proved to be the best Holocaust survivor meet for FFMS students thus far as Mr. Hall shared all of his communication information and Ms. Stewart’s students will be working with him throughout rest of the school year.

𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵: 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲

During lunch periods, Manteo Middle School’s SAVE Promise Club hosted activities to encourage students to think about school safety and the role they can play in supporting one another.

The club is helping build a positive school culture where every student feels safe, supported and empowered to speak up when they see a classmate in need.

Thank you to Outer Banks Hotline for your support, along with Ms. Houseknecht and the SAVE Promise Club members for all your hard work organizing these activities. Our students are helping make their school community a safer, more supportive place for everyone!

Congratulations and good luck, Lady Canes! 🏐

A huge thank-you to everyone across Dare County Schools and Hatteras Island who came together to find a safe way to get the CHSS volleyball team to their playoff game. It truly takes a village, and we are fortunate to have such an incredible community that shows up for our students!

Special thanks to DCS and CHSS leadership, the DCS Transportation Department, the Dare County Sheriff’s Office, the Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo Fire Departments, and our Hatteras Island Board of Education member, Mr. Kenny Brite, for helping make this possible.

Let’s go, Lady Canes!

Our Lady Canes Volleyball Team may have had a slightly untraditional sendoff, but they were sent off in true Hatteras Island style! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make this special sendoff possible and showed our girls just how much their community is behind them!

Our Lady Canes brought home another victory tonight and are advancing to the third round of the playoffs in Chapel Hill tomorrow evening!

We couldn’t be prouder of these young ladies, their determination, and the heart they bring to the court! Hatteras Island is cheering you on every step of the way!

Did you know Dare County Schools participates in the Got to Be NC Farm to School Program? This program connects schools with North Carolina farmers to bring fresh, locally grown produce and meat to our school cafeterias.

All Dare County Schools will operate on a normal schedule Wednesday, October 21, with the exception of Hatteras students who attend Dare Early College. After-school activities will also continue as planned.

Hatteras students who attend Dare Early College will continue to attend school virtually while NC Highway 12 is closed. Students may choose to complete school work at Cape Hatteras Secondary School if they choose.

Todas las escuelas del condado de Dare funcionarán con horario habitual el miércoles 21 de octubre, a excepción de los alumnos de Hatteras que asisten al Dare Early College. Las actividades extraescolares también se mantendrán según lo previsto.

📣 Welcome Manteo High School's New Assistant Principal Marty Creech

Dare County Schools is pleased to announce that Martin “Marty” Creech will transition to assistant principal at Manteo High School, effective Nov. 2.

Creech currently serves as assistant principal at First Flight Elementary School and brings more than 20 years of experience in education, including classroom instruction, educational technology and district leadership.

Congratulations to Superintendent Steve Basnight!

Steve Basnight has been named a regional finalist for the inaugural North Carolina Career and Technical Education (CTE) Superintendent of the Year Award, representing the Northeast Region!

Under his leadership and through his support of our outstanding CTE team, Dare County Schools has expanded hands-on learning opportunities, strengthened partnerships with local businesses and industries, and nearly tripled annual industry-recognized credentials earned by students — from 1,000 to 2,970.

From aviation and boatbuilding to hospitality and skilled trades, DCS students are gaining valuable experience and credentials that prepare them for future careers.

As we continue to monitor the weather conditions, we want to provide an update regarding our school schedules for tomorrow, Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

At this time, all Dare County Schools will operate on a normal schedule tomorrow, with the exception of Hatteras students who attend Dare Early College. Hatteras students who attend Dare Early College will attend school virtually and may do so from Cape Hatteras Secondary School if they choose.

𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿-𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲.

We are closely monitoring the weather and will communicate any necessary changes to school schedules as soon as we have additional information. We are also keeping a close eye on the forecast for Wednesday and will provide updates if adjustments become necessary. This system continues to evolve and the exact track will determine the possible impacts to our area.

We understand the importance of keeping families informed and appreciate your patience and flexibility as we continue to monitor conditions and make decisions with the safety of our students and staff in mind.

Por el momento, todas las escuelas del condado de Dare funcionarán mañana con horario normal, a excepción de los alumnos de Hatteras que asisten al Dare Early College.
