Elder Abuse Awareness Month proclamation at city hall!

06/04/2026

The CDC defines Elder Abuse as โ€œintentional acts or failure to act that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older adult (age 60 or older)โ€
Hereโ€™s what it looks like โฌ‡๏ธ

โ€ข Physical abuse - inflicting physical pain or injury upon an older adult (hitting, pushing, pinching, pulling hair, moving in a rough manner, etc). This includes "Confinement" = restraining or isolating an older adult, other than for medical reasons.

โ€ข Sexual abuse - touching, fondling, in*******se, or any other sexual activity with an older adult, when the older adult is unable to understand, unwilling to consent, threatened, or physically forced.

โ€ข Emotional & mental abuse - verbal assaults, threats of abuse, harassment, or intimidation.

โ€ข Financial Abuse - means the misuse or withholding of an older adultโ€™s resources (exploitation).

โ€ข Neglect - Comes in Two Forms:
1. Passive Neglect - a caregiverโ€™s failure to provide an older adult with lifeโ€™s necessities, including, but not limited to, food, clothing, shelter, or medical care.
2. Willful Deprivation - denying an older adult medication, medical care, shelter, food, a therapeutic device, (unless when the older, competent adult has expressed a desire to go without such care).

If you are experiencing elder abuse, you know someone who may be experiencing it, or you have questions, see these resources โฌ‡๏ธ
