A Safe Place, Inc. Nantucket https://linktr.ee/asafeplacenantucket For an overview of our programs, please read the information provided below. Individual and group counseling are available.

A Safe Place strengthens the Nantucket community by supporting & empowering adults & children impacted by domestic & sexual violence & abuse, while also leading education, awareness, & prevention efforts. Services at A Safe Place are confidential and are available without regard to race, color, immigration status, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. Domestic Violence Community Based Services: Our advocates are available day and night to answer calls to our 24-hour hotline, respond in person to assist with restraining orders in court or at the police station, and provide support as requested in crises at the Cottage Hospital. Depending on the needs of the client, our services range from a listening ear to basic needs items such as food and clothing. In extremely high risk situations, we make available emergency “safe home” while plans are being made to leave the island. Individual and group counseling are important components of this program. Sexual Assault Prevention & Survivor Services: Trained Rape Crisis Counselors (RCC) are available day and night to provide information, support and options via our 24-hour hotline (508-228-2111) whether the assault occurred recently or long ago. For those who take the courageous step of undergoing a forensic evidence collection exam, “rape kit”, an RCC will provide in-person support and advocacy at the hospital. In the aftermath, our caring and knowledgeable staff will provide on-going support and counseling to the survivor and/or their friends and family. Should the survivor wish to press civil or criminal charges, our staff will continue to provide help and support every step of the way. Supervised Visitation Center: The overarching goal of our Visitation Program is to provide a safe and comfortable environment for children to maintain a relationship with both parents while attempting to insulate them from the conflict between parents.
*Supervised Visits allow non-custodial parents to visit and play with their child(ren) in our comfortable living room. The entire visit is monitored by trained staff and on-site security.
*Neutral Exchange allows for a smooth transition between
parents when a restraining order or other reason prevents direct exchange of children. Child Witness to Violence Program: The immediate and long term effects of witnessing violence in the home are well documented. Through our Child Witness to Violence Program, we work to mitigate the damage by providing therapeutic support to children and their non-offending family member(s) which consists of a combination of individual and family sessions, depending on the age of the child. Education and parenting support are important components of this program which also includes periodic support groups for youth and parents. Description

Purple stands for peace, courage, survival and our commitment to ending abuse.

We wear purple on October 22 to show survivors they are not alone and to take a stand against domestic violence.

We hope that you will too.

While these topics are difficult to talk about, it is necessary that we do.

Domestic violence, s*xual assault, child s*xual abuse, and exploitation happen all around the world — including here on Nantucket.

Whether realized or not, these crimes do not discriminate by age, race, gender, social or economical tiers, states, towns, communities, etc.

We often find it easier to look away than to acknowledge the issues or address them — which is why it is so important that we talk about them.

The more we talk about it, the more we can help survivors come forward, process their traumas, and live healthier lives.

The more we talk about it, the more we can stop the cycles — in society, in families, and in the next generations.

The more we talk about it, the safer and healthier our communities become.

If you or someone you know is a survivor of domestic violence, s*xual assault, child s*xual violence, or exploitation, please know that free and confidential help is available within the Nantucket community.

This includes A Safe Place’s 24-hour hotline at 508.228.2111 where you can remain anonymous to ask questions and or receive support.

At A Safe Place, there are no stigmas, judgment, or shame.

Survivors qualify for services regardless of when the traumas occurred, even if decades have passed.

Everyone is worthy of healing, no matter how long it takes to reach out for help within a lifetime.

You are never alone.

The Nantucket Atheneum, in collaboration with A Safe Place, will host a Lunch and Learn event, According to the Statistics, on October 22 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.

Join A Safe Place’s Community Educator, Dr. Kimal McCarthy, as he shares facts about domestic violence and leads a discussion on how our island community and individuals can help to mitigate, with a goal to end, domestic violence. This presentation uses both national and local Nantucket data.

Participants are encouraged to bring a light lunch and incorporate purple in their attire as part of October’s Wear Purple Day in solidarity with survivors.

Desserts will be provided by A Safe Place.

Registration for Lunch and Learn is required at nantucketatheneum.org (view the Nantucket Atheneum, Our Island’s Free Public Library online calendar for link to register).

A Safe Place’s Silent Witness Project, a visual representation of the Massachusetts women, men and children who have been murdered by acts of domestic violence each year, remains visible throughout the island community until Tuesday, October 27.

Each year, A Safe Place displays individual stories on silhouettes placed around local island businesses as a reminder of how domestic violence is very real.

While this topic is difficult to talk about, it is necessary that we do.

We ask you to remember that these lives are not just homicide statistics, they are parents, children, siblings, family members, friends, coworkers, and fellow Massachusetts community members whose lives mattered and were forever taken due to violence.

Thank you to each and every location sponsor who supports our mission via connection and visibility. We are grateful for you.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), a month focused on remembering victims whose lives were tragically lost to abuse, advocating for survivors, educating the public, and creating much needed change.

While this topic is difficult to talk about, it’s necessary that we do.

During DVAM, communities and advocates across the country come together to raise awareness in an effort to put an end to the cycles of violence and coercive control tactics.

Please join us on Thursday, October 22 by wearing purple in support of survivors and advocating for change.

It takes a village.
