This will be our last Facebook post -- as you know, on July 1, Wolfe Center services are set to become a program of Aldea Children & Family Services. We're so proud of the work we've done over the last ten years, and we know Aldea will do a great job continuing that important work -- please support them as you have Wolfe! If you have any questions about services, please contact Aldea directly. Happy Summer, and best wishes to all our clients and friends.

Big news for Wolfe Center and Napa! As you may have read in the Register, as of July 1, 2014, alcohol and drug prevention and treatment services for youth, formerly provided by Wolfe, will instead be a program of Aldea Children & Family Services. Melding operations in this way to create a seamless behavioral health model of care will create a better experience for clients of both our organizations, since substance abuse and mental health issues are often closely linked. Until then, Wolfe Center will operate as usual, so keep checking our FB page! And thank you for your past and continuing support!

Even casually smoking ma*****na can change your brain, study says 04/16/2014

You may believe that it makes little sense to incarcerate people for years for ma*****na possession or use. But it makes even less sense to assume that, because pot is a "natural" substance, its occasional use is harmless, any more than smoking just a few ci******es is harmless.

Even casually smoking ma*****na can change your brain, study says "People think a little recreational use shouldn't cause a problem...our data directly says this is not the case."

Criminal Neglect: Substance Abuse, Juvenile Justice and The Children Left Behind 04/07/2014

Not breaking news, but still shocking: Substance abuse was tightly linked with the offenses of 78.4% of young people involved with the juvenile justice system, according to a report released by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University, but almost none of them received treatment.
The 177-page report of the five-year study, Criminal Neglect: Substance Abuse, Juvenile Justice and The Children Left Behind, found that 1.9 million of 2.4 million juvenile arrests had substance abuse and addiction involvement, but only 68,600 young people received treatment. When will our society ever learn the importance of helping young people struggling with substance abuse, before they get into life-altering trouble?

Criminal Neglect: Substance Abuse, Juvenile Justice and The Children Left Behind This report documented the result of profound societal inattention to the needs of 2.4 million children engaged in the juvenile justice system and millions of others following in their footsteps.

Selling a Poison by the Barrel: Liquid Ni****ne for E-Cigarettes 03/26/2014

Hard to believe these powerful neurotoxins are unregulated. When they come in bright colors and in flavors like chocolate, bubble gum, and cherry, “It’s not a matter of if a child will be seriously poisoned or killed,” said Lee Cantrell, director of the San Diego division of the California Poison Control System and a professor of pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco. “It’s a matter of when.”

Selling a Poison by the Barrel: Liquid Ni****ne for E-Cigarettes “E-liquids” used to refill e-ci******es are potent, unregulated neurotoxins. Evidence of the potential dangers is already emerging.

More good news at Wolfe Center! We’ve just learned that counselor James Nicolis and Wolfe Center have been awarded one of only five Excellence in Supervision Awards, given each year in the U.S. by Breining Institute to “to recognize exemplary commitment to quality supervision by award-winning agencies, and to encourage other agencies to likewise ’raise the bar’ for quality and competent clinical supervision.” This recognition comes with a $1,000 award to James. Is it any wonder that we’re so proud of our staff?

Yesterday, March 13, we celebrated the graduation of four brave young people from our treatment program! Graduation is always Wolfe’s happiest, most uplifting event. The crowd was standing room only as their counselors introduced the students one by one, talking proudly about their achievements. Cathy Dominguez, a recent graduate of Adult Drug Court and honored guest, spoke about her own struggles and praised the strength and determination of the clean and sober graduates. Retired Judge Raymond Guadagni gave the keynote address. Family, friends, Wolfe Center staff, county employees, and Napa dignitaries mingled after the ceremony to enjoy cake and bask in the joy of the moment. We send our heartiest congratulations to the graduates, who at this young age have already shown such courage in taking charge of their lives.

Turns out that even minimally "buzzed" drivers aren't safe behind the wheel. A recent study published in the journal Injury Prevention showed that drivers with a blood alcohol content of .01 percent, well below the U.S. drunk driving limit of .08, were 46% more likely to be solely responsible for a crash than a sober driver. Let's all be safe out there, and never drive buzzed, or get in the car with someone who is.

Buzzed drivers under legal limit still risk car accidents NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Even drivers with a slight buzz are more likely to be at fault for accidents than the sober drivers they hit, according to a new study. The authors looked at fatal car crash

We're thrilled that Michael and Teresa Graham, of Napa Valley Tours and Transportation, were recognized by Congressman Mike Thompson last week for their extraordinary service to the community and, especially, Wolfe Center. NVTT has been in business since 1997; they've repaid the community for their success by donating the use of their cars to deliver Thanksgiving dinners for Meals on Wheels and giving free rides every Friday and Saturday night in December, as well as on every holiday when people may need help getting safely home. Besides generously donating rides for Wolfe Center kids whenever asked, they also support the Boys and Girls Club, Kiawanis, the Napa Valley Educational Foundation, Sunrise Rotary, and Toys for Tots. Congratulations, Mike and Teresa, and thank you!
