My statement on the alleged plot targeting a Hindu temple in Aurora, IL:
I am horrified by reports of an alleged plot for a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Aurora. No one should ever have to fear for their safety because of their religion, ethnicity, or heritage. I condemn all forms of hate and violence, and my thoughts are with the community impacted by this disturbing incident.
I am also deeply concerned by the anti-immigrant rhetoric that has become far too commonplace in our public discourse. When people in positions of influence normalize hatred and bigotry, they contribute to an environment in which violence and hate crimes can take root. Those who use this rhetoric must recognize the harm their words can cause and the responsibility they have to bring people together, not drive them apart.
It is especially important that we stand together across our differences to confront hatred and bigotry. Everyone deserves to worship freely and safely, without fear of intimidation or violence. I stand in solidarity with the Hindu and Indian American communities and reaffirm that every community belongs in Illinois. Hate has no place in our state.
