When you walk through a Conservation Collier preserve, you’ll notice small parts of a much larger ecosystem. Beneath your feet, soil and fungi cycle nutrients. Insects pollinate plants and become food for birds, frogs and other wildlife. Water moves through wetlands, supporting countless organisms along the way. Plants provide food, shelter, nesting habitat and water filtration. Next time you’re on the trail, look a little closer. There’s more happening than you realize 🐛🐊🪲🕸️🌿

After the rain, the preserves come alive! A downpour can bring out a whole new side of your Conservation Collier preserves 🌧️

Here are a few things to look for along the trails:
🐸 Frogs & amphibians: Look and listen for increased frog activity and calls
🍄 Mushrooms: Rain can trigger a rapid fungal growth
🪲 Insects: Rain can change insect activity, creating new feeding opportunities for birds, frogs, bats and more!
💧 Temporary wetlands: Seasonal wetlands and puddles can provide important habitat for aquatic organisms and amphibians.
🐾 Wildlife tracks: Wet soil can make wildlife tracks easier to spot and identify
🐌 Snails & Slugs: these often hidden creatures are out and about moving through the leaf litter after rain

For a short time each fall, the landscape at Pepper Ranch is transformed by these bright blooms - a beautiful reminder of the seasonal changes happening throughout Southwest Florida. These native wildflowers are buzzing with life, providing nectar and pollen for pollinators and seeds for songbirds. Their dense stands also offer food and cover for a variety of wildlife. 🦋🐦🦌

It’s National Mushroom Month 🍄‍🟫 As we continue to get more rain across your Conservation Collier preserves, pay attention to all of the mushrooms popping up! Fungi help break down dead plants and other organic material, returning nutrients to the soil and supporting healthy ecosystems. And what we see above ground is only a small part of the story - most of a fungus lives underground or within decaying material as a network of tiny threads called mycelium. 🦠

Mushrooms pictured:
Milk-white Toothed Polypore
Lepista tarda
Indigo Milkcap
Snow Fungus
Cinnabar Bracket
Pleated Pluteus
Goblet Waxcap
Golden Reishi

Trail cameras at Conservation Collier preserves have captured plenty of raccoon activity and they’re one of our most common trail camera visitors. From curious young raccoons and entire families to raccoons fresh from the water, these cameras capture all kinds of raccoon moments as they explore and use the preserve. Trail cameras give us a chance to see the wildlife that calls this protected habitat home 🦝 🎥
