Who is Responsible for the Repairs?

The property owner's responsibility begins where Nashville Electric Service connects the service drop wires that are run from the electric pole and transformer to the owners building or house and connects to the service wires that are going into the owners service riser and meter base where the electric meter is installed.

Any damage to the electrical system from this point to the electrical breaker panel or fuse box must be repaired by a licensed electrical contractor. To verify a contractor's license, visit verify.tn.gov

Don’t get scammed - Before you hire any contractor, ask for proof of license, insurance, and credentials.

01/29/2026

Metro Codes continues to hear reports of unregistered and unlicensed contractors conducting electrical repair work necessary for power to be restored to damaged structures in Davidson County. All work must be inspected before NES will reconnect and inspections may only be requested by a licensed electrical contractor.

Verify the credentials of any contractor before hiring them to conduct the necessary repairs.

For further information on emergency reconnects or to schedule an inspection, contact Metro Codes at (615) 862-6560.

⚠️ SCAM ALERT: Don’t fall for post-storm scammers!

We have received reports of individuals charging homeowners upwards of $2,200 to repair damaged meter bases and other equipment. These scammers are often unaccredited or do not have the credentials to work in your county and are taking advantage of the current situation in Nashville to pressure residents into work that will not send a code release for their power to be restored.

While it is true that homeowners are responsible for the weatherhead, service mast, and meter base, please follow these steps to stay safe:

Verify Credentials: Only hire licensed and registered electrical contractors.

Get a Second Opinion: A $2,200 quote for a simple meter base repair is often an extreme markup.

Don't Be Pressured: Real contractors will provide written estimates along with their credentials and won't demand immediate cash or digital wire transfers on your doorstep.

Metro Codes recently became aware of a disturbing new trend in which scammers are using artificial intelligence to gather publicly available information from government websites and public meetings; this includes information such as project name, location, vendors, and approval contacts, staff reports/comments, and permit documents.

Permit applicants are being scammed out of real money through highly sophisticated, targeted email attacks that convincingly appear to come directly from local government and request personal information or payment.

Metro Nashville does issue legitimate notifications regarding permit and development fees; however, applicants are always asked to remit payment in person or via credit card at epermits.nashville.gov and are never instructed to pay via wire transfer.

Legitimate emails from our Permitting Division are sent from official Metro Nashville addresses that end in “.gov." Any emails from other domains should be treated as suspicious and we strongly recommend you contact [email protected] if you have any questions about an email you receive or to verify payment details. Do not use any contact information provided in the suspicious email, as that may not be legitimate.

Metro Codes works with Metro ITS, and its vendor GeoCivix to ensure that all permit applicant information is handled safely and securely. The information being used to perpetrate these attacks did not originate from the Metro Codes Department or its vendor, nor is it the result of any breach of our information systems. The data being exploited is publicly accessible information regularly published as part of transparent government processes.

For more information, please contact [email protected] or call (615) 862-6517.

On December 18, 2025, Metro Codes Mechanical Inspection Chief Alan Fort issued the following notice to contractors registered in Davidson County.
