MNPS HERO

Team HERO + our amazing interns + our honorary teammate from Soles4Souls took a field trip today to see The Experience Lab by charity: water by charity: water at The Factory in Franklin. We hoped to get a boost of inspiration from another group who’s trying to make life better for an underserved population- just like we are here in Nashville, but on a different and global scale. We left with wheels spinning and knowing more about the world water access crisis than we did before. Check it out and let us know what you think! September is one of the best times of the year- the enrollment rush is slowing, new ideas are being implemented and…OUR INTERNS HAVE ARRIVED! This year, Adora and Eric join us from the Vanderbilt HOD team for the Fall semester, and Kylie will be with us all year as a social work student Belmont University Social Work. We look forward to the fresh energy and new eyes they will bring to the work we do with youth in unstable housing. Vanderbilt University Belmont University | Nashville, TN 🎵

We love celebrating the people and organizations who support students alongside us. This morning’s Sunrise to Success breakfast with Persist Nashville was inspiring. About Persist ➡️ 🎓 Half of high school graduates in the U.S. receive a postsecondary degree or credential. For Metro Nashville Public Schools students, that number is just one in four.

Persist was founded by two Nashville educators, Scott Campbell and Kristin King, who knew that this statistic didn’t reflect the potential they saw in their classrooms. They envisioned an organization that could leverage technology to provide high-quality college success coaching to low-income students, first generation college students, and students of color. Persist Nashville was founded with the vision to double the number of Nashville graduates earning a college degree and with the mission to empower those graduates to earn their degrees.

Since launching in 2019, Persist students have had an 84 percent success rate and more than 175 have earned a postsecondary degree or credential. 🎓💙

New friends from Brentwood Baptist Church collected items this summer to help us to prepare for a great start to the school year for MNPS HERO program students. They brought needed school clothing items, school supplies, food for our HERO Pantry and more. The start of a fun new relationship and example of how everyone can do a little something to help students and families. 💪🩳🎒

It's been a great start to school at the HERO and Nashville Community Connections hub as we work to make school days easier for students navigating unstable housing situations. Big thanks to our team, volunteers, partners and supporters for all their effort and to WKRN News 2 and Jaxie Pidgeon for highlighting this work and how Nashvillians can get involved.

Our good friends at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (ELCA) come together each August to help us prepare students for a good school year! When you visit their website, one of the first things you see is that “Y’all Means All!” 💙 They put that thoughtful intentionality into the shopping they do for Metro Nashville Public Schools students, and that care shines through. 🎒🚌👕🩳

From Nashville to Guatemala - our friends Soles4Souls are creating opportunity for people through shoes ⭐

Some of our HERO and Nashville Community Connections team traveled to Guatemala recently with our partners at Soles4Souls. We had the privilege of witnessing their work in action on an international scale - from helping distribute shoes to children to seeing how their 4Opportunity program turns gently used shoes into a business model and mentorship.

Experiencing this work firsthand deepened our appreciation for the mission we are a part of here in Nashville through the 4EveryKid initiative, where we distribute thousands of new shoes to students each year.

We spent this special time working alongside other folks from across the country who also support students in unstable housing, building relationships and sharing best practices. Soles4Souls - Thank you for having us on this truly remarkable experience💙

Several HERO families are moving into housing this Winter - help us support them through Nashville Community Connections! 💙💙💙

Want to help make a family moving into stable housing after a period of homelessness cozy this Winter? We know you do! We used our community-fueled HERO Family Fund to purchase seven (7!) beds this week. Let's band together to fill in with sheets, pillows and a few other basics we don't currently have in stock.
