🌱 Keep Your Winter Garden Growing! 🌱
Can you enjoy fresh lettuce and spinach from your garden all winter long? Master Gardener volunteer Mike Brindle demonstrated how on October 17 at the Nash County Farmers Market, sharing his method for protecting cool-season vegetables from winter’s cold.
🪴 Here’s how Mike does it:
🌾 Surround your garden with straw bales or bags filled with leaves to help block the cold.
🌿 Stretch agricultural hoop wire over the plants to create a frame.
❄️ When temperatures drop to 28°F, cover the plants with agricultural frost cloth. For extra protection, add an old blanket on especially cold nights.
🌨️ When snow is expected, add a layer of plastic over the other coverings.
Using this method, Mike harvests lettuce and spinach from November through April, with production slowing briefly in January!
🌷 And when spring arrives? Cut the strings on the straw bales and spread the straw around your plants as mulch. If you used bags of leaves, simply spread the leaves over your garden. Pin oak leaves can be used as mulch without shredding them first!
