What your child's kindergarten teacher wants you to know

1. Your job isn’t over when you drop your little one off at school; keep your child’s teacher informed about what goes on at home that might affect your child’s behavior or academic performance.
2. This is not your grandfather’s kindergarten. The expectations of what children need to know when they enter kindergarten are closer to what used to be expected of a first grader. To further boost your child’s academic skills:
• Talk with her about what interests her, encourage her to be curious and ask questions, point out letters and numbers when you see them in books and around town.
3. Your child needs lots of opportunities for play outside of school. Play is the way in which he learns about himself and the people and world around him. Playing both alone and in small groups helps facilitate learning and allows your child to practice skills and concepts.
4. Homework is an opportunity for talking, sharing, and listening. Teachers give homework to extend the learning of the classroom. It is a chance for you to find out what your child is studying and how well he is grasping the skills and concepts being taught at school.
5. Television and video games use up valuable playtime. Limit screen time. The hours spent with these electronic devices could otherwise be spent talking, reading, or actively learning through play.

Una families, please join us in congratulating our Teacher of the Year, Ms. Abigiail Spaziani!

Ms. Spaziani serves many roles at our school. She is our 1st Grade English Language support teacher, a member of our school's leadership team, and a supportive co-worker to her teammates and others. Ms. Spaziani has been a dedicated teacher for seven years and is also a student. She is currently pursuing her doctorate at MTSU.

Congratulations, Ms. Spaziani! We are so proud to call you part of the Una Family.

Ms. Carroll is one of our EL Kindergarten teachers and has worked at UNA for the last four years. She has recently written and published a children’s story about the pandemic which is currently for sale on Amazon.com.

This story is an engaging account of what some children may have encountered during the pandemic. It explains the changes that took place during this time and focuses on the silver linings that came about because of it. Children will able to connect to the illustration’s as well as the easy to read rhyming format. It is also available to take out at the school library.

Parents, we are doing a live Q&A session tomorrow evening regarding returning to school. The link will be on your child’s homeroom schoology page just like the open house link was.

-The session will begin at 5:30 in English
-Followed by a short break, then another session in Arabic starting at 6:15
-There will be another short break, followed by a session in Spanish at 6:45
-The entire event will end at 7:30
