With the rollout of new ELA standards back in 2025 came morphology--the study of affixes, or word parts, and how they fit together and connect or change the meanings of words. In addition, Berrien Academy has adopted a schoolwide literary initiative to raise students' reading levels. For that, Ms. Fellows has brought everyone together--teachers included!--with a lesson in morphology and semantic mapping! Each student in her ELA classes "owned" several prefixes, which they dissected on a shared chart. Then, they took their prefixes into the hallway where they mapped them semantically, according to meaning; each class creating a different chart. Lastly, the teachers came through! And while they couldn't follow directions as well as the students, they finally managed to get their chosen words onto the map with a color representative of their subject. A fun, collective learning project for the whole BA family!
