It is with great sadness that we announce that CRIT is closing soon. We appreciate all of the community support over many years. We especially appreciate the hard work of our staff and volunteers in serving refugee and immigrants in our community! If you have questions about the closing, please private message us. We are still working hard to continue many of our services to the community through arrangements with other organizations. We do have furniture and supplies that need to go, so if you're interested please let us know. Thank you for allowing us to serve the diverse communities of Nashville!

Pride Over Prejudice 06/23/2016

There are now 59.5 million people who have been forcibly displaced from their homelands worldwide. Among them, nearly 20 million are refugees, half of whom are under the age of 18.
Take a photo with a sign that fills in the blank, “My family comes from _______" to show your pride and combat anti-immigrant and anti-refugee hate speech!

Artistic Opportunities!

The Center of Refugees and Immigrants of Tennessee offers Refugee and Immigrant Students Empowered (RISE) as an after school and program for refugee and immigrant RISE provides its programs in a safe and engaging environment. We work in partnership with each community, school, and family to design the program that meets their specific needs. RISE strives to advance English language learning, while also investing in developing strong social-emotional skills. We draw upon the most effective academic enrichment, physical fitness, nutritional and life skill programs to challenge children and make learning fun. Our program allows students to transcend differing languages and cultures to express themselves in a powerful medium.

This year RISE was granted funds from the Metropolitan Nashville Arts Commission (MNAC). MNAC's vision is that every Nashvillian participate in a creative life and its mission is to drive a vibrant and equitable community through the arts. In an effort to advocate MNAC's vision and RISE's purpose, RISE is hosting a four-day art intensive summer program, May 31, 2016 – June 3, 2016. If you are based in Nashville, create art, interested in teaching art, and wish to participate, please email Dandrea Alexander at [email protected] with your name, resume, and a brief description of the work you produce. Deadline to participate Wednesday, May 25, 2016 by 11:59pm.

Burmese-Style Pickled Mustard Greens

Makes about 6 cups

Ingredients
2 big bunches mustard greens
1 cup water, plus more as needed
2 tablespoons sugar
3 heaping tablespoons salt
1/4 cup unseasoned rice vinegar or distilled white vinegar
3 to 5 thick crosswise slices of peeled fresh ginger root

Directions
Coarsely chop the stems and leaves of the mustard greens; place in a very large glass or other nonreactive bowl.
Boil the 1 cup of water; transfer to a small bowl if needed, then stir in the sugar and salt until dissolved. Stir in the vinegar. Pour the mixture over the mustard greens, then add the ginger and enough cold water to ensure that the greens are completely submerged. Cover and let sit at room temperature for 3 days.
At this point, the greens can be served. If you don’t eat them right away, refrigerate in airtight containers, using enough of the brine to completely submerge the greens, for up to 1 month.

Recipe from the Washington Post, adapted from Grace Lichaa of New Morning Farm in Hustontown, Pa.
