We lost another brave second-generation law enforcement officer Sunday at the hands of a domestic violence offender in Hinds County, Mississippi. Please pray for Sgt Shields, his family and fellow deputies. Every part of a domestic violence response is dangerous, even a request to stand by for property.

Our training team, Chief Tom Tremblay, Rhonda Martinson, J.D. and I looking forward to this exciting opportunity this January 20-23 in Bucharest to learn from criminal justice professionals and share our experiences in the prevention of gender based violence.

Bias, intentional or unintentional, are byproducts of our habitual ways of thinking. If you are human, you are susceptible to bias. It may be human, but it is unacceptable when it conflicts with law enforcement's professional duties, ethics, or the law. It is every officers' duty to ensure they deliver on the promise of fair and equal justice for all. To that end I'm so very proud to have completed this two-year project for the US Department of State Bureau of Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs and the National Center for State Courts to Mitigate Bias in the Criminal Justice System to be taught to foreign police worldwide. This week we handed off the course to the very capable hands of Sgt. Oscar Pla and his training staff of the Miami-Dade County Police INL Academy. This program was designed to help officers think about the actions they take to meet this responsibility. The course objectives are to understand the professional duties to mitigate bias, to describe the impact of bias in law enforcement, to recognize risk factors for bias in everyday decision-making and to identify strategies that may help to mitigate bias.

Honored to be back on the job this morning training police, advocates, prosecutors and judges in Toledo to understanding trauma and how to deal with s*x offenders. We have lots to do. I hope to see you along the way.
