Tennessee Woman Suffrage Monument
Tennessee Woman Suffrage Monument was gifted to the City of Nashville by the nine women who raised the money and commissioned sculptor Alan Lequire.
Dedicated August 18, 2020 at permanent location, 2525 West End Avenue, Nashville TN. Nine women from across Tennessee raised the funding needed to commission sculptor Alan LeQuire, to create a fitting memorial to the Tennessee suffragists who helped assure the state's ratification of the 19th Amendment on August 18, 1920. Today is the 125th anniversary of the Ratification of the 19th Amendment by the Tennessee Legislature. Tennessee was the 36th and final state needed for the ratification. The papers were sent to Washington and on August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment became a part of the U.S. Constitution. For the past week we have had several productions in Nashville of the Musical entitled, "A Vote of Her Own" co-written by Candace Corrigan, a self-taught historian of the issues surrounding the passage. She has captured in song, the struggle that culminated a 72-year struggle by three generations of women to gain suffrage. An attendee snapped a picture of Alma Sanford, founder of the Tennessee Woman Suffrage Monument, non-profit and Candace Corrigan, co-writer and co-producer of the wonderful Musical. We also captured a picture of the final scene in the play where the amendment has finally passed and yellow and red rose petals were being dropped from the balcony at the Tennessee House of Representatives.

📜 On this day in 1919, the Senate passed the 19th Amendment, after 41 years of persistent advocacy.
The amendment had been introduced in Congress every year since 1878. It wasn’t until June 4, 1919, that it cleared the Senate, just two weeks after passing the House. From there, the race to ratification began.
Today, we honor the generations of women and men who fought tirelessly for the right to vote. 🗳️
