As we close out Strangulation Awareness Month, we want to remind our community that strangulation is one of the strongest predictors of lethal violence. If someone has strangled you, they are 750% more likely to later kill you, and often with a gun.
Even if there are no visible injuries, strangulation can cause serious internal injuries and long-term health complications, including stroke and brain injury. If you have experienced strangulation, it is important to seek medical care and support.
The Family Safety Center is here to help. Call 615-880-1100 or visit ofs.nashville.gov.
If you or someone you know has experienced strangulation, support is available. Contact the Family Safety Center at 615-880-1100 or visit ofs.nashville.gov for assistance and resources.

“Safe hands don’t hurt.” What some people call “choking out” is actually strangulation. Any time someone puts their hands around your neck or cuts off your ability to breathe, it is strangulation.
Strangulation is a serious and deadly act of violence that can cause internal injuries, long-term health effects, and even death, even when there are no visible marks.
If this is happening to you or someone you know, help is available. You are not alone. 💜

In Tennessee, strangulation is recognized as a serious and potentially lethal act of violence. Thanks to legislation passed in 2023, individuals who commit strangulation may now face Attempted Homicide charges. This important advancement was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Metro Nashville Police Department, the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office, and the Metro Nashville Office of Family Safety.
If you or someone you know has experienced strangulation, support is available. Contact the Family Safety Center at 615-880-1100 or visit ofs.nashville.gov for assistance and resources.

It's been a week since the ribbon cutting of the FSC Medical Clinic, and we are still just as excited. Since the opening, we've already had multiple clients access medical care, showing just how crucial it is to have a clinic on-site for victims of interpersonal violence, especially those who have been strangled. Thank you again to those who joined us at the ribbon-cutting and for supporting our office in making this a reality.
