The Tennessee State Library & Archives is a division of the Department of State, administered by Tre Hargett, Secretary of State. The Library & Archives collects and preserves books and records of historical and legal value, with a focus on items related to Tennessee. It actively promotes library and archival development throughout the state and serves as the home of the state's Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.

Stop by the seed station and plant your own Tennessee native plant to take home. Choose from a variety of seeds including wildflowers and other native plants, then pot them using soil, tools, and guidance from our team.

A rare sneak peek into Tennessee history. 🔎

Tennessee’s original state constitutions are usually stored safely in a secure vault for 364 days a year. Once a year, they are brought out for special public viewing.

See them on Statehood Day, Saturday, May 30 starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Tennessee State Library and Archives.

Happy 5th Anniversary to the new Tennessee State Library and Archives!

Five years ago today, we officially opened the doors to our state-of-the-art facility at 1001 Rep. John Lewis Way N., near the northeast corner of Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park. Since that landmark day on April 12, 2021, we've welcomed thousands of students, genealogists, and history enthusiasts to explore Tennessee's rich legacy in a space truly built for the 21st century.

Whether you've visited us to trace your family tree, attend a workshop, or explore our historic exhibits, thank you for being a part of our story. Here's to many more years of preserving the past for the future!

Our own State Librarian & Archivist, Jamie Ritter, was honored to speak today at the Chattanooga Rotary Club, the 12th oldest Rotary club in the nation, about the Tennessee State Library and Archives.

Jamie was the guest of Arch Trimble, and also in attendance is the Director of the Chattanooga Public Library, Will O’Hearn.

We are always happy to share the outstanding resources and services of our State Library and Archives with communities across Tennessee!

It’s time! Registration for the 2026 Historians in Training: Jr. Archivist Summer Camp is now open! Through a variety of hands-on activities, campers between the ages of 8-12 years old will spend the week of June 8th-12th exploring the world of archives, libraries, museums, and more.
