Good News!!

“Last week, the Whitehaven community came together for a standing-room-only town hall to speak honestly about the challenges surrounding the Elvis Presley Boulevard project. Residents and business owners shared their concerns about safety, delays, and the need for greater urgency and accountability.
Today, I am encouraged to see TDOT respond with meaningful steps to strengthen oversight, improve coordination, and move this project forward. I appreciate Commissioner Will Reid, Mayor Paul Young, and our local and state partners for listening to the voices of our community.

Today’s announcement is a reminder that government works best when it listens to the people it serves. I am encouraged to see Whitehaven’s voices reflected in meaningful action.

While this is an important step, our work is not finished. I will continue working alongside residents, businesses, and our government partners to ensure this project stays on track and that the promises made to our community become visible progress.

Whitehaven deserves safe streets, thriving businesses, and infrastructure that reflects the pride and strength of this community. I look forward to seeing the improvements TDOT has committed to delivering and will continue advocating for the people I am honored to serve.”

Proud to share that the Higher Education Purchasing Act is now law.

For too long, private nonprofit colleges and universities in Tennessee—including many minority-serving institutions—have paid higher prices for the exact same goods and services available to public institutions through state purchasing contracts.

This law helps level the playing field by allowing eligible private institutions to access the same cooperative purchasing opportunities available to public colleges and universities—helping schools save resources that can instead be invested in students, instruction, financial aid, and campus operations.

Grateful to Rep. for bringing me this innovative bill to sponsor in the Senate.

Republican lawmakers in Tennessee have moved forward with a plan that would split the state’s lone majority-Black congressional district in Memphis into three separate districts. Democratic lawmakers say the move will dilute Black voting power and help Republicans maintain control of the U.S. House ahead of the midterms.

The proposal is part of a growing effort across Southern states after the U.S. Supreme Court weakened key protections in the Voting Rights Act. The Root spoke with state Senator Raumesh Akbari after her emotional speech on the Tennessee Senate floor this week where she called the proposal “an act of hate” and “racism.”

She said Tennessee is becoming one of the clearest examples yet of what happens when federal oversight of voting laws disappears.

“This is the new Southern strategy to completely dilute and spread out Black voters so that their voices do not matter,” Akbari said. “This will be the greatest blow to Black representation and Black political power since the end of Reconstruction.”

We voted and now I’m headed to Nashville. It is absolutely unreal that on Election Day, I’m headed to Nashville for a special legislative session to fight against discriminatory congressional maps specifically designed to dilute the black vote in Memphis. I never thought in my lifetime I’d witness such an extreme attack and rollback of civil rights. But like the late Congressman John Lewis said, “Ours is not the struggle of one day, one week, or one year. Ours is not the struggle of one judicial appointment or presidential term. Ours is the struggle of a lifetime, or maybe even many lifetimes, and each one of us in every generation must do our part.”

We must do our part.
