Progress on the relocated Alcoa Highway bridges looks VERY different, depending on where you look. This phase stretches from the interchange at Tyson Boulevard to SR 115 at South Singleton Station in Blount County. Right now, the project has 2 complete bridges, 3 in progress, and 1 waiting to get started. Crews are also working on drainage as well as sewer and electrical infrastructure. The bridge section is expected to be complete in the fall of 2027.

The full closure of I-65 from the I-40 interchange (Exit 210) to near the I-440 interchange (Exit 80) is *THIS WEEKEND*. The closure allows crews to safely demolish the Hamilton Avenue bridge deck over I-65 in Davidson County. Additionally, we will fully close the I-65 northbound on-ramp from Armory Drive and I-65 northbound & southbound on-ramp from Powell Avenue to allow traffic on I-65 to merge onto I-440 without conflict. The full closure will run Friday, October 16, at 8 p.m., through Monday, October 19, at 5 a.m

No trick, all treats here! This thermal drone video provides a unique view of the SR 76/US 79 project in Carroll County, highlighting the extreme heat of the fresh asphalt.

Crews are currently laying asphalt on the main stretch from SR 77 to Newsome Road. Most of the grading is also complete, and crews will soon shift their focus to the side roads.

Once complete, the project will add 5.4 miles of new roadway from SR 77 to Cutlip Lane, improving safety and capacity between Milan in Gibson County and McKenzie in Carroll County.

It's a THREE-PEAT! TDOT crews have won Best Overall at the Southeast Regional ROADEO Competition for the third year in a row, taking home the title in 2024, 2025 and 2026. That's 12 total wins!

The ROADEO brings together transportation departments from 12 southeastern states for a competition that tests heavy equipment operators on safety, accuracy, agility and speed. But it's about more than bringing home a trophy. These skills translate directly to the work our crews do every day to keep Tennessee moving, from clearing snow and ice to removing storm debris and making emergency repairs to our roads.

Congratulations to our crews on another outstanding performance!

TDOT is preparing for the potential of severe weather this weekend, with Hurricane Isaias expected to impact our state in different ways. Crews are clearing drains and checking trouble spots to ensure water can drain off the roadways properly and ensuring potentially needed equipment is ready to go. HELP Operators will also be ready to respond to direct traffic around water on the roadway. Remember, you can check smartway.tn.gov for the latest conditions. But ultimately, TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN.

More than *22 thousand* motorists have been helped since TDOT first launched the Rural Service Patrol this spring. That includes services like tire changes, providing emergency fuel, and helping direct traffic around crashes.

Rural Service Patrol is funded through the 114th General Assembly’s historic investment in TDOT’s transportation budget, including new recurring General Fund dollars dedicated to roadway safety. Remember, you can call 511 to get help from RSP on all Tennessee interstates.

Building a bridge over water comes with its own challenges, including keeping the water out while you build.

As crews pour concrete for the bridge’s foundation, some of the water mixes with the concrete, creating a watery mixture called “slurry.” As fresh concrete is pumped into the shaft, that slurry is pushed toward the top and pumped out, leaving behind the concrete needed to form the foundation.

Crews are using this process as they build the substructure for the new SR 71/US 321 bridge, just outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Pigeon Forge project is part of TDOT’s Three-Year Bridge Replacement Program, which is replacing aging bridges across Tennessee. Construction is expected to be complete in fall 2028.

We’ve moved onto the FINAL phase of the SR 55 widening project in Tullahoma, and that means working on the EB side of the roadway! Crews are installing sidewalks, streetlights, and new signals while also finishing up some remaining grading. Up next: paving! The finished project will widen SR 55 from First Avenue to SR 16 and replace the bridge over North Fork Rock Creek.

The Hamilton Avenue bridge deck over I-65 in Nashville needs to be replaced ASAP, and that means demolition. To do so safely, we can’t have traffic driving underneath. We know what you’re thinking (Homecomings! Fall breaks! Concerts! Probably a couple of bachelorette parties, too!) but we crunched the traffic and event attendance numbers… and this was the best option for October to get this work done by the holidays. So here’s an early heads up on what’s happening:

Thursday, October 8 at 8 p.m. – Friday, October 9 at 5 a.m.
Crews will have intermittent lane closures on I-65 SB between the I-40 Exit 210 ramp and near the I-65 Exit 80 off-ramp to I-440. A FULL CLOSURE OF I-65 SB in this area will occur for about 30 minutes around midnight for signage removal.

Friday, October 16 at 8 p.m. - Monday, October 19 at 5 a.m.
I-65 will be FULLY CLOSED in the same area while crews demolish the Hamilton Avenue bridge deck.

Remember HELP Truck Operator, Chester Hembree, who helped deliver a baby on I-40 in Knoxville earlier this summer? TDOT was excited to receive this adorable update from the child’s family, sporting a onesie celebrating the unique arrival. While this is not the most common way a HELP Truck Operator might assist a motorist, Hembree says he is thankful to have been in the right place at the right time.
