Mass Audubon Broadmoor Broadmoor’s nine miles of walking trails guide you through a variety of field, woodland, and wetlands
(401)

Broadmoor’s nine miles of walking trails guide you through a variety of field, woodland, and wetland habitats. A quarter-mile, universally accessible trail and boardwalk along the bank of Indian Brook and over the marsh offers great opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and sketching. To enjoy this site in the winter, bring your snowshoes or cross-country skis. Stroll along the edge of Indian Brook, which flows into the Charles River at the sanctuary, and look for wood ducks and signs of beavers and otters from the 110-foot-long bridge.

/Wood/ you believe that we saw 19 of these ducks on our recent fair weather birding walk?

Right about now, Wood Ducks are starting to gather in groups at nightly roosts, preparing for their upcoming migration journey. Many males are also shedding their more muted summer plumage and regaining their vibrant colors, making them easier to spot out on the marsh.

Broadmoor is home to our favorite fuzzy ecosystem engineer, the beaver 🦫 Visitor Alyssa K recently shared her sighting with us:

“I first visited Broadmoor in the fall of 2024 and instantly fell in love. I noticed beaver activity and was shocked to find out that MA had beavers and that there were active lodges. Every visit after I kept an eye out to see one live and in person. This May I was enjoying late afternoon’s warm sun with a notebook in hand and a beautiful view from the board walk. I saw a friend swimming from the distance and thought to myself, it has to be a muskrat; beavers don’t come out this early, I wouldn’t be lucky enough to spot one. And yet, it was a beaver who swam RIGHT UP to the board walk to say hello!”

Thanks for sharing your wild story, Alyssa! If you also love the beavers at Broadmoor, go wild for them this October: get free resources, limited-edition tees, and share your wild story with us at massaudubon.org/wildforwildlife.

Warbler migration is well underway, and the sanctuary is full of sound as thousands of birds make their way down south. This brief warm period is slowing migration down slightly, so make sure to get out there and look for them before they're gone!
