Yesterday, Firefighter Josh McFarland returned to work for the first time since returning from his military deployment nearly a year ago to the Middle East.

Here he is removing the flag from fire headquarters that signified his deployment. We are grateful to have FF McFarland back and for the service he provided his country. Welcome home.

A different type of Naugatuck FD history post this week. Photo is from the Naugatuck Daily News dated July 8, 1914. I have transcribed actions from an article covering the Borough Board meeting relating to the fire department.

The board voted to approve of the action of the Fire Committee and Fire Chief in purchasing a pair of horses for the Maple Street hose house.

A communication was received from Fire Chief Hoadley recommending that a double hydrant be installed on the east side of Spring Street near the Noyes Wilmont property and also that a single hydrant be changed to a double hydrant no action taken.

A communication was received from Charles E. Pearson of the fire company stating that the Fire Police have never been sworn in Burgess Fitzgerald stated that the Fire Police have been approved by a previous board but clerk Sears said he understood that they had not been notified of their appointment. A vote was passed to approving the appointments. The fire police are M. R. Hardt, William R. Kerr, August Horn, Peter J. Ford, Joseph Roberts and M. Stanley Webster.

In communication to the board secretary Charles E. Pearson of the fire company stated that the company had accepted the changes in the companies bylaws as written in a stipulation, a care upon by the attorney for the late Borough Board and the company‘s attorney in the adjustment of the injunction brought by the company against the late Bureau board and that their acceptance leaves the Incorporated without a place to meet and transacted business.

The writer has been requested to ask the board to grant the incorporated company permission to hold meetings at the Maple Street hose house four times a year to transact it’s necessary business. The board voted to grant the request, but warden remarked that it should be understood that these meetings would not conflict with any meetings of the fire company as a borough organization.

A communication was received from the fire company asking that the tax of $49.50 be elevated the warden was instructed to appoint a tax abatement committee, and it was voted that the matter of the proposed abatement be referred to that committee. The warden stated he would name the committee later.

Burgess Fitzgerald on the fire committee called attention to the need of fire horses to take out apparatus in case of a second alarm, he said Mr. O’Brien had agreed to send a pair of horses to the hose house after every alarm the clerk was instructed to prepare a form of agreement between the borough and Mr. Obrien when the alarm now rings, the horses respond with a hook and ladder truck and the auto chemical also response, leaving no horses for the chemical engine in case of a second alarm.

A vote was passed, giving the two drivers of the fire apparatus a week vacation with pay

A motion of Burgess Fitzgerald the vote passed some months ago giving drivers of the Fire Chief's car $.50 per hour was rescinded. It is said that the plan to compensate drivers of the Chief car did not work out satisfactory.

We have hand written journals of fires and department meetings going back to the 1890's. Fire incident reports then were just brief descriptions of the event, far from what we report now. This fire occurred on January 5th, 1904. The log entry reads:

Jan 5. Alarm blown for Box 23 at 2 am. Fire in Angelo Rossi's fruit store at east corner of center bridge. Fire gutted the building known as the Bernie block. Hydrant froze. Phoenix Shop pump furnished water. Recall at 5:10 am. Thermometer at 30 below zero.

At the end, in different hand writing: Worst night ever

Center bridge is the Maple Street bridge. The Phoenix Shop is where Trinity Walk-In is now on Maple street, their water pump supplied the hydrants downtown. Fire alarm box 23 was located on Maple Street. The photo is from the Naugatuck Daily News.

Naugatuck Hose Co #1 jumper cart Vigilant at a parade in Unionville (Farmington), September 20, 1911. No idea how it traveled from Naugatuck to Farmington, maybe by train?

On September 20, 1911, Unionville was the host location for the annual "Fireman's Field Day". Most of the public and private buildings in town were decorated with bunting for the occasion. In honor of the celebration, businesses and factories were closed for the day. As many as 500 firefighters with their equipment and vehicles marched along the five mile long parade route accompanied by six or seven bands and drum corps. The event was witnessed by over 6000 visitors. In addition to the parade, the day's festivities included a number of sporting events, a concert band, dinner, and evening dance.

Naugatuck firefighters lined up with their apparatus at Fire HQ on Maple street. Photo is undated, possibly sometime in the 1930s or 1940s. Can anyone identify the make and year of the Chief's car in the center?

There are five vehicles on the apparatus floor. Today we can barely get a car between two fire engines.

The two vehicles on the right have steel tires, a holdover from horse drawn wagons.
