On September 11, 2001, Director of Public Safety Fred V. Morrone of the Port Authority Police Department made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
A 38-year law enforcement veteran, Morrone had served with the Franklin Township Police Department, the New Jersey State Police, and ultimately the Port Authority Police Department, where he served as Superintendent of Police.
When the first plane struck the World Trade Center, Morrone was in a New Jersey office. Rather than remain safely away from the unfolding disaster, he drove to the Twin Towers to assist those in danger.
Morrone was last seen near the 45th floor of One World Trade Center. As people were evacuating the building, they passed him as he was making his way upward—offering encouragement and assistance to those he encountered.
He was 63 years old.
Throughout his career, Morrone was known as a dedicated investigator, a leader who demanded excellence, and a law enforcement professional committed to preparing those who would follow him. His legacy included strengthening training standards and helping establish programs that would serve generations of Port Authority police officers.
On September 11, 2001, Fred V. Morrone ran toward the danger while others were running away.
Today, we remember his courage, his service, and his sacrifice.
We honor Director of Public Safety Fred V. Morrone and all of the 9/11 victims who made the ultimate sacrifice.
