A few strong storms may develop over northeast Mississippi this afternoon. One or two storms could produce a wind gust near severe limits. Overall, the chances for severe weather are low.

This week, DeSoto County Emergency Services personnel assigned to Mississippi Task Force 1 partnered with other Task Force 1 members, as well as members of Task Forces 2 and 3, the Mississippi Fire Academy, and the Mississippi National Guard to conduct joint training exercises with an emergency services and military delegation from Uzbekistan.

Over a 5-day period, the delegation will receive training in technical rescue and firefighting operations in different parts of the state. Each exercise is hosted by one of the state’s three urban search and rescue teams.

Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are anticipated to develop this afternoon and evening. Damaging winds are the primary threat. These storms will be efficient rainfall producers, and may cause minor flooding issues due to extremely dry soils leading to run off.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for northeast Desoto County until 6:00pm.

Gusty winds up to 60mph and nickel size hail are the primary threats.
