Story County is excited to announce our 2026 Citizen of the Year, Susan Moore. Moore demonstrates her commitment to the Story County community through her professional and volunteer work in mental health, substance use care, and homelessness support.

Moore’s “focus on solution-oriented strategies has led to the development of creative programming,” according to one of Moore’s nominators. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Homeless Outreach and Support Team (HOST), a collaborative initiative that shares resources and promotes housing stability among Story County residents. Moore also has been a key volunteer in The Warming Place, a new initiative to ensure that unhoused individuals have a warm place to stay during the coldest nights. In addition to serving as an on-call volunteer to assist overnight shift volunteers in dealing with any difficult situations, she also frequently helped cover shifts when a second volunteer could not be found (protocol requires a minimum of 2 volunteers on site).

Moore also serves the County community through a range of other organizations and initiatives. Moore is currently on the Board of Center for Creative Justice, is involved in The Red Shirt Foundation, was active in the Community Conversations on Mental Health series and the Homeless Action Report Forum and regularly trains local service providers on Mental Health First Aid. As a social worker in the Behavioral Health Unit at Mary Greeley Medical Center and a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor, Moore also is known for facilitating effective group sessions, including for those with co-occurring disorders.

In all settings, Moore is known for her abilities in building relationships, promoting collaboration, ensuring that all voices are heard, advocating effectively, and inspiring others to join in. As another nominator stated, “she approaches each person with compassion, dignity, and a genuine commitment to helping them succeed.” Additionally, Moore is heralded as a mentor by other service providers and as someone who “goes above and beyond” in all her involvements.

Meet Meowsala! She is this week's Adoptable Pet of the Week. 🐱🩷

About a year and a half ago, Meowsala was adopted from our shelter and found exactly what every cat dreams of—a loving home where she was happy and deeply loved. Sadly, her owner recently passed away and Meowsala has found herself back at the shelter. After knowing the comfort of a loving home, being back in a shelter has been an adjustment. But despite what she’s been through, Meowsala hasn't let it change her sweet spirit. Meowsala is truly one of the sweetest, calmest, and most gentle cats you could ever meet. She is quiet, clean, and incredibly content to simply curl up beside you and soak up all the love you’re willing to give. She has cute, short little bursts of playful energy, but for the most part, Meowsala is happiest just being near her person. She is the kind of cat who gives her whole heart to her person and is so deserving of a peaceful forever home where she can once again feel safe, loved, and cherished.

Meowsala is FIV+ but don't let that stop you from adopting this sweet girl! While cats diagnosed with FIV can have weaker immune systems, many cats do not show any symptoms during their lifetimes and can live normal lives. FIV is not considered contagious and can only be spread through deep flesh bites, making it possible for non-FIV cats to live safely alongside FIV cats as long as no intense fighting occurs. Meowsala has done well with other cats in the past.

Story County’s Secondary Roads team has been busy keeping our roads and bridges safe and maintained despite a particularly wet fall. Seven construction projects are underway or completed in 2026, including asphalt overlays, bridge replacements, and a culvert project. The department is also preparing equipment for the upcoming winter snowplow season while addressing drainage and erosion issues caused by recent heavy rains. Plans are moving forward for a potential roundabout at Cameron School Road and GW Carver Avenue, along with several federally funded bridge projects. We also want to recognize Brett Fry and Mark Brakke, who recently retired after an incredible 34 years of service to Story County! 👏 To review the full report, please visit https://www.storycountyiowa.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Item/36847?fileID=30231

10/06/2026

The Board of Supervisors proclaimed October 2026 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Every person deserves to feel safe and secure in their home and relationships; domestic violence undermines that safety and can have lasting effects on survivors, children, families, and communities. We urge our citizens to observe this month by becoming aware of the tragedy of domestic violence and supporting those who are working toward its end.

Thank you to representatives from Assault Care Center Extending Shelter and Support (ACCESS) for being there to accept the proclamation. 💜🎗️
