FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Recent public discussion regarding county financial records has raised questions about reported discrepancies in county accounting. To ensure accurate public understanding, county officials wish to clarify the nature of the issue and correct several inaccuracies that have appeared in recent media reports and public commentary.
The matter identified does not involve missing funds from county bank accounts. Rather, it relates to accounting and reconciliation discrepancies involving cashbook records, bank reconciliations, and fund balance reporting that accumulated over time. County funds remained in county accounts, and there has been no finding that $3.4 million was missing or unaccounted for.
Some recent reports and social media posts have characterized the issue as involving “missing” county funds. That characterization is inaccurate and does not reflect the findings of the financial review. The discrepancies stem from bookkeeping and reconciliation issues that affected the accuracy of reported balances, not the existence or location of county funds.
Following a detailed review of county financial records, officials determined that certain accounting adjustments are necessary to bring county records into alignment with actual account balances. The reconciliation process indicates that the required adjustment is exactly $470,679.22, substantially less than the amount referenced in some public reports.
County officials remain committed to transparency, accountability, and sound financial management. Efforts are ongoing to complete the reconciliation process, strengthen internal accounting procedures, and ensure the accuracy of all financial records moving forward.
The county encourages residents to rely on official financial reports, public records, and verified information when evaluating this matter. Accurate and complete information is essential to maintaining public trust and ensuring informed discussion of county government operations.
