What an absolutely wonderful service these nurses provide in honoring those who once served alongside them in the nursing profession.

Their tribute is loving, compassionate, caring, and beautifully detailed. The respect and dignity they show during each service is a touching reminder of the dedication, sacrifice, and compassion that define a life spent caring for others.

We are incredibly fortunate to have this wonderful group in our community and to have the opportunity to work alongside them during services as they pay tribute to fellow nurses who devoted their lives to the care of others.

When making arrangements for your loved one, please be sure to mention if they served as a nurse during their lifetime. This allows the Northeast MS Nurse Honor Guard to be contacted and given the opportunity to honor and remember your loved one’s years of service, compassion, and devotion to others.

Once a nurse, always a nurse. A lifetime of caring deserves to be remembered.

Several members of the Northeast MS Nurse Honor Guard had the privilege of meeting and paying a living tribute to Mary Lou Burt at Ashland Health & Rehab just this past June. She was overjoyed by the recognition, which makes the shock of her sudden passing after a brief illness even deeper.

On August 26, 2026 this group again met with Mary Lou Burt’s family and friends to offer our condolences and pay tribute to her nursing career.

Through our encounters with her, we were reminded of just how valuable each day is. Mary Lou lived every day to the fullest, serving others in her own special way. Her motto was to always have fun and practice self-care so she could remain fit to care for others.

Mary Lou was a magnet; people naturally gravitated toward her contagious attitude. Those blessed to cross paths with her will always remember her love, generosity, and genuine spirit. She loved people and the simple things in life, yet she was extravagant when it came to gifting her family, friends, and especially her nieces and nephews. In her spare time, she loved shopping with her sister, and she always made sure she looked her best—never missing a chance to get her hair, nails, and pedicures done.

She was always up for an adventure, even learning to swim at age 60! Traveling was high on her bucket list, taking her to exotic places like Hawaii and Mexico. Yet, she was completely content with the simplest moments: a good book, a cold Coke, and sitting outdoors watching the chickens scratch and peck. What an incredible example she was of how to love, serve, show kindness and truly embrace the simple moments in life.

In a beautiful, full-circle twist, Mary Lou spent her final days residing at Ashland Health & Rehab—the very facility where she once served as the Director of Nursing toward the end of her incredible 30-plus-year career. Her path to nursing is an inspiring story of pure determination. Though her dream didn't become a reality until 18 years after high school, an unexpected door opened while she was working as a long-distance operator at Bell South. When the company transitioned to AT&T, they offered employees corporate-financed college tuition for a career change. Mary Lou jumped at the chance to pursue her true calling. With the unwavering support of her husband and family she graduated from Holmes Community College as part of a historic class—the very first group of Mississippi graduates to take the NCLEX exam on a computer!

Gerontology nursing quickly became her passion. Her first role was at a local nursing home in Grenada, Mississippi, where her exceptional skill, loving kindness, and pride in her work deeply touched residents and families alike. Over the decades, her excellence earned numerous awards, but her true joy came from mentoring others. She always offered this timeless piece of advice to fellow nurses: “Learn something new every day.”

Mary Lou Burt, thank you for your dedicated nursing service and for the incredible example you set for others on how to embrace life. You are released from duty and we’ll continue to carry the torch

On August 15, 2026, the Northeast Mississippi Nurse Honor Guard had the deep privilege to stand and honor a true giant in our community. We said goodbye to our colleague, friend, mentor, and physician, Dr. David Williams. His sudden passing has left a heavy ache in the hearts of his family, his friends, the medical community, and the thousands of patients he served across North Mississippi and beyond.

For over three decades, Dr. Williams was a beacon of hope and healing. He arrived in Union County early in his career. Alongside his practice partner, he changed the landscape of maternal care at Baptist Memorial Hospital Union County. Because of his arrival, we nurses stepped into a new era of education. He taught us to handle intensive maternal-fetal monitoring and high-risk pregnancies. In the OR new technologies were brought into practice.
He was an exceptional mentor. As nurses, we worked shoulder-to-shoulder with him. We knew him as a man of serious purpose and unwavering focus. He demanded excellence because he knew how precious the lives in his hands truly were. Yet, beneath that intense dedication lay a hidden wealth of tender care. He truly felt every patient’s joy. He carried their worries. He brought a calm, steadfast comfort to every room he entered.

Dr. Williams was widely known for his specialized work in infertility. He had a deep desire to help couples become parents. If a case was beyond his scope, his humility shone through, and he knew exactly who to refer them to. Since his passing, hundreds of patients, friends and colleagues have shared their stories. It has been incredibly heartwarming to read of the hope and ultimate success he brought to so many lonely arms and the impact he made in the lives of others.

Though he spent countless hours at his practice and the hospital, we who monitored patients by his side saw his true heart. We knew his family was always his top priority. When his three children were young, they often accompanied him to the hospital. As the years rolled on, he would proudly scroll through his phone, showing us pictures of his beautiful wife, his children, and their accomplishments. He was also a fierce dog lover, and pictures of his "canine kids" were always ready to be shared.

At his beautiful memorial service at First Methodist Church, the afternoon sun beamed warmly through the stained-glass windows as majestic music filled the cool sanctuary. There, his youngest daughter gave us a glimpse into the private joy of his life. We learned how much he cherished his grandchildren, often getting right down on the floor to play with them. We heard of his endless energy at home in Oxford, where he loved working on indoor and outdoor projects at their beautifully renovated older home. A college friend gave insight to the younger David Joe. And we pictured him in his favorite quiet moments, happily watching a ballgame on TV with his beloved dogs by his side.

Dr. David Williams truly let his light shine. The guiding wisdom, enduring warmth, and unwavering compassion he brought into patients' most vulnerable moments will never fade. His rich legacy lives on in his children, his grandchildren, and the hundreds of babies he safely delivered into this world.
He was there for his family. He was there for his friends. He was there for his community, and he was always there for us.
Dr. Williams, you earned the deep love and respect of those who knew you. You made a beautiful difference.
Your shift is over. Your tireless and dedicated work is done. You are now officially relieved of your medical duty. Rest in peace, dear friend. Your colleagues will carry the torch from here.

On August 15, 2026, the Northeast MS Nurse Honor Guard had the privilege of honoring Kathryn Gray Burks Baker, a registered nurse who devoted more than 40 years to caring for others.

This tribute was especially meaningful as we realized Kathryn was once our friend and coworker during the early years of our nursing careers. Over the years we tend to lose contact with friends and coworkers as life changes and personal growth moves people in different directions. So many memories returned as we reflected on a life dedicated to nursing, family, faith, and service.

Kathryn was a well respected Operating Room nurse known for her strength, compassion, tenacity, professionalism, and commitment to excellence. She cared deeply for her patients, coworkers, family, and community. The majority of her nursing career was at NMMC in Tupelo, MS.

Outside of nursing, Kathryn found joy in gardening, birdwatching, and everything outdoors. She enjoyed the simple beauty of nature and the companionship of the animals she cherished. She loved to travel and she loved people. Her caring spirit extended far beyond the walls of the hospital. She served on several mission projects taking her skill and caring spirit to Africa and The Philippines. These experiences reflected her desire to help others and to live a life of purpose beyond herself.
Kathryn remained a steadfast pillar in her church and community until her health failed.

We are thankful for the opportunity to honor Kathryn and grateful to her family for allowing us to share in this special moment.

Kathryn, you carried the torch of nursing well. Your legacy of caring, service, and love will live on in all those whose lives you touched. Thank you for representing your profession so well and for setting an example of excellence, compassion, and service. You are officially relieved of duty. We’ll carry the torch from here.

There is profound truth in the personality traits often attributed to a first-born child. Sandra Savely was described by her family, colleagues, and friends as a natural-born leader—highly motivated, extremely conscientious, responsible, and a perfectionist who remained completely dependable throughout her life. As her obituary beautifully stated, she faced a three-and-a-half-year battle with pancreatic cancer with the same fierce independence, practice of faith, and headstrong resilience that defined her life. Sandra lived by the tenant that the highest purpose is being present and committed to family and community—or in her own unforgettable terms, “when in doubt, show up.” She exemplified this from a very young age, working alongside her family on their commercial farm.

After excelling in high school, Sandra began her nursing education at Itawamba Community College, graduating first as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She dedicated herself to this role before returning to school to further her education as a Registered Nurse (RN). Proving her extraordinary drive, she balanced running a household, raising one child, and expecting another while completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Mississippi University for Women (MUW).

While she worked across various local hospitals, her true primary calling was in Home Health as a North Mississippi Medical Center (NMMC) employee. In this role, her natural first-born traits shone brightest as she forged lifelong, deep friendships with her staff, patients, and their families. She was truly born to care for others. Her remarkable 42-year career, as an RN, served as the absolute foundation for her relationship with her community. She constantly put her professional skills to use as a frequent medical missionary, a medic for numerous youth groups and school field trips, a dedicated caregiver, a regular roadside Good Samaritan, and a constant source of wisdom and advice for family and friends.

Beyond her career, Sandra deeply valued her time with family. An avid traveler, she and her husband Jack were known to put an incredible 35,000 miles on their car and in other forms of travel in a single year. She also possessed a legendary green thumb, which was always evident in her beautifully manicured yard. Sandra was a true Southern lady—always perfectly "put together" and never without well-manicured nails, despite her genuine love for hard outdoor work!

What an incredible legacy Sandra leaves behind for her family, friends, and everyone blessed to have crossed paths with her. She was the epitome of the dedicated nurse that every healthcare employer strives to find. Sandra fully achieved her purpose in life while setting an exceptional example for everyone around her. The Northeast Mississippi Nurse Honor Guard was deeply humbled by how she lived her life and felt incredibly blessed to pay tribute to her magnificent nursing career on July 28, 2026.

Thank you, Sandra, for setting the bar so remarkably high throughout your career and for being such a positive role model. Your life will always be cherished and remembered. Sandra Savely, you are now officially relieved of your nursing duty. We will continue to carry the torch!
