New Berlin Emergency Management has continued to monitor the area near Mark Drive and has been checking the fuel-absorbing booms daily. No signs of fuel or additional spills have been detected.

Because the booms can restrict water flow and no petroleum has been observed, the booms are no longer needed and are scheduled for removal on Tuesday. Sept. 29, 2026.

City personnel continue to assess a suspected gasoline discharge affecting the stormwater system near Mark Drive. Members of the New Berlin Fire Department and New Berlin Office of Emergency Management responded Saturday evening after a resident reported a strong gasoline odor near the waterway behind the 15200 block of Mark Drive. Responders also detected the odor from nearby stormwater inlets.

Due to heavy rainfall and fast-moving stormwater, crews placed fuel-absorbing booms at the western stormwater pond to collect any petroleum that may reach the pond and limit its movement through the system. The source has not been identified. City staff continue to assess the area and determine whether additional response measures are needed.

City teams are coordinating with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources as the response continues. Additional information will be shared if new information becomes available.
