A look back in our history to one of the most influential citizens in New Bremen, Charles Boesel. He was born in Bavaria Germany in 1814 and emigrated to the USA at ae 18. He settled in New Bremen in 1836 and started a general store.

As the canal opened in 1845, he built a warehouse and began dealing in grain. He was soon appointed Postmaster and also started a bank. He later represented Auglaize Couty in our State Legislature from 1862-1866 and served in the Ohio State Senate from 1870-1874. He died in 1885.

Her had three wives and 15 children, with some of them becoming very prominent in local businesses, among them Jacob (1841-1896), Charles (1843-1909) and Julius (1857-1924). They owned the bank, hardware store and a local pork packing company and also built the opera house in 1895.

The Boesel you may personally remember is Jake Boesel (1917-1988), who worked at the bank for 20+ years on N. Main St.
