🎃🐍 DAY 18: The Snake That Looks Like It Belongs in a Fairy Tale! 🐍🎃
Smooth Green Snake
👻 Halloween Myth vs. Fact
Myth: All snakes are dangerous and should be removed.
Fact: Smooth Green Snakes are gentle, harmless snakes that prefer to hide from people rather than interact with them.
🍁 Did You Know?
Smooth Green Snakes are one of Connecticut’s less commonly seen snakes because they blend perfectly into grassy areas and vegetation.
Their bright green color helps them disappear among plants while they search for insects, spiders, and other small prey.
🏡 Humane Coexistence Tip
If you find a Smooth Green Snake, admire it from a distance and let it continue on its way. Avoid using pesticides that can reduce the insects these snakes depend on for food.

🎃🐍 DAY 17: The Tiny Snake With a Big Secret! 🐍🎃
Northern Ring-necked Snake
👻 Halloween Myth vs. Fact
Myth: A small snake is a baby dangerous snake.
Fact: Northern Ring-necked Snakes are tiny, shy, harmless snakes that spend much of their lives hidden.
🍁 Did You Know?
These snakes are named for the bright ring of color around their neck. They are usually secretive and prefer forests, gardens, and areas with plenty of hiding places.
Although small, they play an important role in the ecosystem by helping control small prey populations.
🏡 Humane Coexistence Tip
Avoid removing logs, leaf litter, and natural hiding places unnecessarily. Many small creatures depend on these areas for survival.
A little wild space helps Connecticut wildlife thrive!

A mama's love! The finder made sure mama was in the nest box with her babies before bringing them to Venderick’s Healing Paw! Mama couldn't be saved, but the finder's actions saved her babies! She spent her last moments knowing her babies were in great hands!

This is a heartbreaking post to share, but one we must make to honor this beautiful mama. Last week, we took in a mama squirrel and her three little ones after a concerned family reached out for help. Mama had been a frequent, well loved visitor, but she recently showed up with a severe leg injury.

Tragically, the injury was far worse than it initially appeared. The trauma led to a severe, system wide infection, tendon damage, a shattered ankle, and loss of function. On top of that, she was dealing with necrosis and active maggots in the wound. While we were able to save her three babies, the injury was too advanced for Mama to recover, and the most kind, loving choice we could make was to offer humane euthanasia.

Separating a mother from her babies is always heartbreaking, but she held on for them and it was her strength that brought them to her finder and then to us in time. We are relieved to report that her three babies are healthy and very spicy; which are all great signs. This mamas legacy lives on through her sweet, feisty little ones who will eventually return to the wild.
