Caucus Vice Chair Benjamin J. Matwey joined a demonstration in Kennett Square, PA, on October 17, 2026. Here is his report:

I participated in the No Kings rally protest in Kennett Square, PA. Their largest EVER. Both sides of the street for 4 blocks through the busiest part of town, right next to the new modern glass-walled library.

I saw a woman about my age holding a handmade “Don’t Betray Our Allies” sign. That is it.

Of all the signs I have seen in many rallies in DE, PA, and one in MI (where I participated in a No Kings rally on the main road next to Lake Huron the third weekend of September), this stood out to me: so basic and powerful.

She was not shouting. Not talking with anyone. Alone. Just holding the sign.

I attended with my large American flag and my large sign indicating Air Force Veteran. And a close friend, a veteran with an Army/82nd Airborne and Air Force background, also with a large American flag.

I told her I liked her sign. She was very polite. Said thank you.

I suggested to her that a few more people from military service backgrounds were feeling that way.

She said yes, but more than a few.

I said, the Putin and Trump diesel deal with Russia, undermining Ukraine, helping Iran, puts more American troops at risk.

She said yes, yes, absolutely.

Nothing more was said.

I walked among the entire crowd of protesters, thanked each and every one of them, called them my fellow American patriots, and I was proud to be with them. Some 400 people. Warm, positive responses back from each. Made sure each saw my sign. And I said to each, I am a retired 25-year Air Force veteran. And being here was the most patriotic service we could do together. Even more respectful and positive responses.

Near the end of the rally, I was on the other side of the street.

Saw that same woman again as she was preparing to leave.

She said to me, I like your Air Force sign. She said her brother was a retired Air Force general. I said that’s great.

She said his name.

I was stunned. I asked her to repeat it.

I know him very well! I told her. I served in his chain of command. Certainly not a Democrat. And, a sister (not sure if this was that sister) is a former local elected official in SE PA!! A REPUBLICAN.

I told her my name and asked her to say hello to her brother. She said she would.

Before you knew it, we had four Air Force vets and this sister of a retired general together.

My view:

Even late in the game, some die-hard Republicans can have their core values shaken by Trump, and say, enough. That is my takeaway.

I feel the ground shifting in PA. And in Michigan. I felt it firsthand.

“Don’t Betray Our Allies”

Could not say or write it better myself.

Canada. UK. Japan. Korea. Ukraine. And on and on.

The margins matter.

I can taste victory, but we cannot give an inch.

Today, October 15, 2026 at approximately 2:00 p.m., the Delaware Department of Elections (DOE) received and opened a letter which was discovered to contain a white powdery substance. Staff members followed security and USPS postal instructions on handling suspicious mail. The mail piece was isolated, staff members were decontaminated and evacuated, HVAC system was shut down, and law enforcement, state and federal partners have arrived at the office and are conducting the investigation and testing.

All election offices statewide have sent their non-essential state employees home in an abundance of caution.

Additional information will be provided to the public as the response continues.

What a great day in Harrington! 🇺🇸

A nor'easter did its best to keep people home, but nearly every guest we expected braved the rain to join the Delaware Veterans and Military Families Caucus, the Delaware Democratic Party Pride Caucus , and the Delaware Democratic Black Caucus for our Inaugural All-Caucus Fundraiser.

Thank you to our keynote speaker, Congresswoman Sarah McBride, for an inspiring and rousing address. Thank you as well to Delaware Democratic Party Chair Evelyn Brady, who spoke about why affinity caucuses make our party stronger; to Attorney General Kathy Jennings, who shared her work holding the Trump administration accountable; and to Ted Lauzen, who reminded us how much is at stake in the upcoming elections.

We are grateful to our sponsors, including Senator Chris C***s and Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester, our county and city committee chairs, and the elected officials and candidates who sponsored tables. Your support made this evening possible and helped us welcome guests who could not otherwise have attended.

And to everyone who came out in the storm: thank you. You proved that a little rain is no match for Delaware Democrats.

Now let's carry that energy into November. Volunteer, talk to your neighbors, and make a plan to vote.

Veterans and military families: we want you in this fight, and on the ballot. Join us.

Twenty-five years ago today, the 4.4 million men and women we now call post-9/11 veterans were living very different lives. Some were already adults, and watched the towers fall knowing almost immediately that their lives were about to change. Many of them walked into a recruiter's office within days or weeks, certain of exactly what they were signing up for. Others were children. Some were in elementary school. A few hadn't been born yet. They watched the attacks on television, or heard about them from a parent, or grew up in a country that was already at war before they understood what that meant, and joined years later anyway.

Two different starting points. The same choice.

For the ones who enlisted in that first raw season after the attacks, the choice was made in a moment of national grief and resolve, when the whole country seemed to be looking in the same direction. For the ones who came of age later, there was no such moment to carry them. The unity of September 2001 had long since given way to two grinding wars and a divided country arguing about both. They joined anyway, deliberately, year after year, knowing exactly what they were signing up for because by then the cost was no longer theoretical. It had a name, and a casualty count, and a face in their own hometown.

Both went to Afghanistan. Both went to Iraq. Many went to both, and some went to places the public never heard much about at all. They gave years of their lives, and too many gave everything, to a mission that began on a single terrible morning twenty-five years ago today.

The Delaware Veterans and Military Families Caucus honors every one of them, whichever door they walked through to get there. To every post-9/11 veteran in Delaware and beyond: thank you for serving, and know that we honor you for what it cost you and your families.

For generations, the trade union has been one of the most reliable landing spots for a service member coming home.

A veteran leaves the military with discipline, technical skill, and a work ethic forged under real pressure. Unions recognized that value long before most employers did. Apprenticeship programs in the building trades, electrical workers, pipefitters, and dozens of other crafts have specifically recruited veterans for decades, offering a structured path from boot camp discipline to a stable, well-paying career. No four-year degree required, no starting from zero: just a paycheck, healthcare, a pension, and a trade that respects what military service already taught you.

That pipeline still matters. Too many veterans leave service and struggle to translate what they did in uniform into a civilian résumé. Too many end up underemployed or cycling through jobs that offer none of the security they had in the military. Union apprenticeships and veteran hiring programs close that gap. They offer what every veteran deserves after service: a real career, not just a job. Fair wages. Healthcare. A pension. A voice in the workplace.

This Labor Day, the Delaware Veterans and Military Families Caucus honors that history. Organized labor has been showing up for veterans long before it was a talking point, and Delaware's own building trades and public sector unions continue that work today. When we defend the labor movement, we are defending one of the most proven paths our veterans have to build a life after service.

Happy Labor Day to every veteran who found their next mission on a job site, in a union hall, or on a factory floor.

Dolly Parton never wore a uniform, but she showed up for those who did, again and again, for decades. She played for troops through the USO. She opened Dollywood's gates to veterans, gave them a place to bring their families and just be normal for a day. She understood, in a way a lot of people never bother to learn, that showing up matters more than saying the right words.

Military and veteran families know what it's like to need that kind of support, the practical kind, the kind that doesn't come with a press release attached. Dolly gave it freely, to us and to plenty of others who needed her, too. That's who she was. She didn't reserve her generosity for people who could repay it.

For those of us who served, or who love someone who did, her death today is a real loss. She was one of the good ones, someone who backed her words with action when it came to the people who'd given something to this country. Rest easy, Dolly. Thank you for showing up for us.
