Our purpose
The New Castle High School Alumni Association strives to sustain friendships and memories of our high school days in many ways. We recognize and commend graduates and staff members, who have distinguished themselves as leaders in the world, nation, state, and local community. We as Alumni have the opportunity to pay it forward with our two funds, The New Castle High School Alumni Scholarship Fund and the Trojans Remembered Fund. How we started

Imagine strapping into a rental kart and hitting 55 mph on a full mile of asphalt, all of it tucked down a country road outside New Castle. There's a grill on site and room to camp, so a Saturday here can easily turn into a whole weekend. 🏁

Before it had its famous name, it was just Butler Fieldhouse, and when it opened on March 7, 1928, it was the largest basketball arena in the world. Nearly a century later, it's still standing, still in use, and still giving people chills. 🏀

Architect Fermor Spencer Cannon designed it with an arched steel truss roof so wide and so open that not a single seat in the original 15,000-plus capacity had an obstructed view of the court, an engineering feat for its time. It hosted the Indiana state high school basketball championship for decades, including Milan High School's legendary 1954 title run, the real story behind the movie Hoosiers. In 1966, the university renamed it Hinkle Fieldhouse, honoring longtime coach and athletic director Tony Hinkle, who'd coached there since the building opened.

And when Hollywood came calling to recreate that same championship moment for the 1986 film, they didn't build a set. They filmed the final scenes right there on the original hardwood, under the same arched trusses that had watched the real thing play out three decades earlier. Today it's recognized as one of the oldest college basketball arenas still in regular use in the entire country.

Some buildings just carry more weight than others. 🧡

Back then, a trip to Hinkle Fieldhouse for the state finals was about as big as Indiana got.
